Karl Franz Christian Wagner

Karl Franz Christian Wagner (born November 18, 1760 in Helmstedt , † June 10, 1847 in Marburg ) was a German German studies scholar , university professor and classical philologist .

Life

Wagner was the son of a school principal who had been transferred from Helmstedt to Osnabrück via Braunschweig . Therefore, he grew up in Osnabrück and attended the school there. In 1779 he began to study theology at the University of Helmstedt , where he also attended lectures in the fields of history , philosophy and French, Italian and English literature . From 1781 he studied philosophy in Göttingen and then worked as a tutor for an Italian noble family. He accompanied them on their trips to England and France. In 1789 Wagner received his doctorate in Helmstedt. phil. (Doctor of Philosophy).

After a brief activity as a private lecturer in Göttingen, Wagner took up a position as court master at the Collegium Carolinum in Braunschweig in autumn 1789 . There he was appointed professor of German language and literature in 1792 . He also gave lectures on Greek, Roman and English literature. During this time he wrote several articles and translations, especially on pedagogical and didactic topics. He tried to establish the modern English language in class over French. In 1810 Wagner went to the Philipps University in Marburg, where he worked as a professor for Latin rhetoric until 1834. In 1839 he was appointed privy councilor.

Because of his services to the city of Marburg, he was made an honorary citizen on December 9, 1834.
