Cougar Energy shares with Ergo Exergy Technologies a license for the use of underground coal gasification developed by Ergo Exergy . The main coal gasification project is being carried out by Cougar Energy at Kingaroy in Queensland . The Kingaroy pilot plant's first synthesis gas was produced on March 16, 2010. For commercial use, Cougar Energy is planning a plant that is capable of generating 400 megawatts. Other coal gasification projects of the group are planned in Wandoan , the Surat Basin in Queensland and the Latrobe Valley in Victoria and the Thar Coal Field in Pakistan . Cougar Energy has signed a memorandum that it is in cooperation with Essar Oil from India and with Qi De Investment Co. Ltd. to build coal gasification plants with China in Inner Mongolia.
Problems
On July 16, 2010, the Kingaroy pilot plant had to be temporarily shut down because benzene and toluene were discovered after drilling into the groundwater . However, the proportion of hydrocarbons in this water was 95% lower than the limit value for Australian drinking water.
