Arbogast Schmitt

Arbogast Schmitt (born April 24, 1943 in Linz in Upper Austria ) is a German Graecist and professor of classical philology at the Philipps University of Marburg .

Life

Schmitt graduated from high school in Würzburg in 1962 and then studied Greek , Latin , philosophy and German at the universities of Würzburg and Berlin . After the state examination, he was a student trainee and teacher at high schools in Würzburg ( Riemenschneider-Gymnasium , Röntgen-Gymnasium ) and Aschaffenburg until 1972 . From 1972 to 1981 he was assistant to Ernst Siegmann at the seminar for classical philology in Würzburg. In 1974 he received his doctorate with a thesis on "The meaning of sophistic logic for the middle dialectic of Plato ". 1981 followed, also in Würzburg, the habilitation with the topic "Character and Fate in Sophocles ' ' King Oedipus '".

In 1982 he was given a chair for Greek studies at the University of Mainz. In 1991 he moved to the Philipps University of Marburg, where he works with a research focus on the relationship between the Platonic-Aristotelian epistemology and the epistemology of the modern age and the resulting consequences for the different understandings of aesthetics , ethics and politics in ancient and modern times . He heads the research group on the reception of Hellenistic-Roman antiquity in modern times and its consequences for the opposition of antiquity and modernity, as well as the research group on Aristotelian rationality as the basis of the cultural bridge between Orient and Occident in the Middle Ages. He retired in September 2008.

In addition to an extensive edition of articles and the writing of some monographs, Schmitt is intensively active as a translator and editor and oversaw the edition of the lexicon of the early Greek epic as chairman of the commission of the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen , of which he has been a corresponding member since January 2008, until the end of the Project in 2011. He is also a member of the interdisciplinary teaching and research network “Images of People”.

On July 14, 2011, Schmitt held his farewell lecture at Marburg University. The Department of Philosophy and Humanities at FU Berlin has appointed Schmitt as honorary professor since 2011 .
