Wolfgang Hering attended high school until February 1945 and was then first in the Reich Labor Service until 1946, then a war participant and then a prisoner of war. After graduating from high school, he began studying classical philology , which he completed in 1951 with a diploma. He then became a lecturer and, from 1953, scientific assistant at the Institute for Classical Philology at the Wilhelm Pieck University Rostock (WPU). In November 1954 he received his doctorate in Rostock with a thesis on The Dialectic of Content and Form with Horace. Satires Book I and Epistola ad Pisones , the habilitation followed in June 1960 with the work Die Recensio der Caesarhandschriften . Hering was then appointed to the professorship for Prehistory and Classical Studies in the History Section at the WPU. In 1987 Gabriele Bockisch became his successor, but without becoming a professor.
Hering is best known as a specialist in Caesar's writings . His edition of C. Iulii Caesaris Commentarii rerum gestarum (Teubner, Leipzig 1987, ISBN 3-322-00351-5 ) is considered to be one of the standard editions of this work.
