Johannes Posselius (the younger) ( Latinized from Possel , born June 10, 1565 in Rostock , † around June 20, 1623 in Rostock) son of Johannes Posselius (the elder) , was professor of Greek and rector of the University of Rostock .

Life

Posselius (the younger) followed his father's example to the University of Rostock in 1582 and matriculated in philosophy and medicine. During his studies, Posselius switched to the Helmstedt University, which is dependent on the University of Rostock, and after his return to Rostock received his doctorate in 1587 with the academic degree Magister . In his academic work, Posselius was guided by the focus of his father's content: ancient Greek language and literature. In 1590 Posselius (the younger) accepted the call to be rector of the Latin School, today's old grammar school , in Flensburg. After just under a year, however, due to the death of his father, he returned to the alma mater in Rostock. Here, in 1591, after the death of his father, he received the appointment as professor for the Greek language and two years later, in 1593, admission to the council of the University of Rostock. It was not until 1595, after almost four years of professorship, that Posselius (the younger) was accepted into the philosophy faculty.

In 1599/1600 Posselius (the younger) was appointed rector of the University of Rostock for the first and only time , and in 1605 rector of the Rostock Latin School, which later became the Great City School . He held this office until his illness in 1615. Johannes Posselius (the younger) died in Rostock on June 20, 1623.

Works

Johannes Posselius (the younger) is comparable in his achievements with those of his father, but he did not succeed in gaining influence beyond Rostock. Publication activities were the renewed edition of the Apophthegmata graecolatina published by his father and the Familiarum colloquiorum libellus . Important and important publications by Posselius (the younger) was the complete edition of the works of Hesiod as well as Xenophon's Hercules and the Hecuba of Euripides .
