St. Laurentius Church (Walsdorf)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The St. Laurentius Church is an Evangelical Lutheran church in the Upper Franconian community of Walsdorf . It is one of the oldest Protestant churches in the Bamberg district .

The oldest preserved part is the church tower from the 14th century. On its east wall, very simple stonemason marks even point to the middle of the 12th century. According to the sources, the originally higher tower is said to have had a pointed roof and Gothic windows. It is assumed with certainty that Walsdorf was a parish with a church even before the establishment of the Bamberg diocese in 1007 . It is therefore older than the Bamberg Cathedral, which was completed in 1237 .

1524 Walsdorf came to Wolf von Crailsheim, who took part in the guarding of Luther on the way to Worms and is said to have been involved in his rescue. Due to the denomination of its landlord Wolf von Crailsheim, the Walsdorf Laurentius Church became Protestant after the Reformation and the mother church for 26 surrounding towns. This resulted in a hundred-year conflict with the diocese of Bamberg and Walsdorf temporarily became Catholic again during the Thirty Years' War .

The church burned down twice and was last rebuilt by the Crailsheim family . The tower was rebuilt in 1577 and the nave was completed in 1608. From 1701 to 1759 the interior of the church was redesigned in Baroque style and the tower was given its Welsche dome .

"Anyone entering the church from the church square is surprised by the unusually rich and harmonious furnishings that are rarely found in the Bamberg area". In addition to the altar , pulpit , royal box and organ prospect, the valuable carved and painted wooden epitaphs (tombs) from the 17th century are worth seeing . This includes the epitaph of the widow († 1616) made by Johann Rochus Kneutzel († 1631) in 1619 by the royal Bamberg and Brandenburg builder Erasmus Braun († 1606), who is buried in Walsdorf.
