Karl-Heinz Krüger (born December 25, 1953 in Templin ) is a former German boxer who won medals at the Olympic Games , World and European Championships .

Career

Krüger started boxing as a teenager. Due to his good boxing perspectives, he was delegated to ASK Vorwärts Frankfurt and trained there by Manfred Wolke . He first appeared in 1975 when he represented the GDR in an international match against Poland and won a points win over Zbigniew Kicka in the welterweight division .

In 1976 he finished third in the GDR welterweight championship behind Jochen Bachfeld and Peter Spilski .

At the big international boxing tournament of the Cuban boxing federation "Giraldo-Cordova-Cardin" in Pinar del Río , Karl-Heinz Krüger fought his way up to the finals and was defeated in this against Emilio Correa on points. Given the tough competition from the Cuban boxers, an outstanding achievement.

In 1977 he was then for the first time GDR welterweight champion with a points win in the final over Detlef Kästner . In the same year he represented the GDR at the European Championships in Halle (Saale) . He won there against Poland's Bolesław Nowik (5-0), Gianfranco Rosi from Italy (5-0) and the Romanian Vasile Cicu (5-0), each clearly on points. In the final battle, however, he lost with the same result against the Soviet athlete Valeri Limasow and thus finished second.

In 1978 Karl-Heinz Krüger trained because of the better international prospects in the light welterweight division. He surprisingly lost in the final against Olaf Schneider on points (2: 3) at the GDR championship in 1978 in this weight class, but was still used at the world championship in Belgrade . There he won over US boxer Lemuel Steeples (5-0) on points and over Christos Kakouris from Greece by breaking off in the second round. In the semifinals he suffered a narrow point defeat (2: 3) against the Yugoslav audience, who was frenetically cheered on by the local Mehmet Bogujevci , which threw him out of the race. But he had already won a bronze medal at the World Championships by reaching the semi-finals.

In 1979 Karl-Heinz Krüger won his second GDR championship title. In the final of the light welterweight division he defeated Uwe Friedrich by breaking off in the third round. At the European Championships this year in Cologne he defeated Ace Rusevski from Yugoslavia on points (4-1) and won against Werner Schäfer from the Federal Republic of Germany , because he had to be taken out of the fight due to an injury in the third round. In the semifinals he was again defeated by a Soviet boxer, Serik Konakbajew , who won against him in the third round by breaking off.

In the 1980 Olympic year, Karl-Heinz Krüger won the GDR championship again with a point victory over Ralf Hunger , but in the welterweight division. He also started in this weight class at the Olympic Games in Moscow and fought his way through points wins over Mohammad Ali Eldachan, Syria (5: 0), Lucas Msomba, Tanzania (5: 0) and Joey Frost, United Kingdom (5: 0) Bronze medal . He was denied access to the gold medal in the semi-finals by Andrés Aldama from Cuba , who beat him on points (0: 5).

In 1981 Karl-Heinz Krüger suffered a point defeat at the GDR championship in the final in the fight against Michael Timm . It was already becoming apparent that young and hungry boxers would like to replace him in the GDR. In the 1981 European Amateur Boxing Championships in Finland's Tampere but he again flashed his skills and arrived with wins over Victor Carvalho, Portugal , Michael Kopzog , BRD u. Vesa Koskela, Sweden in the final. In this he was again defeated against Serik Konakbajew . With the EM silver medal , he won his fifth medal in a row at an international championship.

Karl-Heinz Krüger managed to keep his place in the GDR national team even in 1982. He therefore started at the World Cup this year in Munich , but lost there in the round of the last "32" against Kornan Kanyoike from Kenya on points (1: 4) and therefore ended up in 17th place. Then he ended his international boxer career.

Krüger took over a coaching position at his club, the ASK Vorwärts Frankfurt (Oder) . Even after German reunification , he remained a trainer in Frankfurt (Oder), because a performance base for the German Boxing Association (DABV) was established there. He also became the head coach of the Bundeswehr sports promotion group in Frankfurt (Oder). He succeeded in bringing many boxers into the international top class. Names like Falk Huste , Kay Huste , Dirk Eigenbrodt , Torsten May ( Olympic gold medal in 1992 in Barcelona ) and Sebastian Köber are just a few that testify to Karl-Heinz Krüger's successful coaching work.
