Lemuel Steeples

Lemuel Steeples (born 1956 in St. Louis , † March 14, 1980 in Warsaw ) was an American boxer .

Career

Lemuel Steeples started boxing as a teenager in St. Louis / USA. In 1978 he made the leap to the US national team of amateur boxers. In the same year he competed in the World Cup of Amateurs in Belgrade . He lost there in light welterweight (back then up to 63.5 kg body weight) in the first round against Karl-Heinz Krüger from Frankfurt (Oder) on points and was eliminated without placing.

In 1979 he became the American light welterweight champion. He won it in the final over Milton McCrory . In the same year he also won the Pan American Games in San Juan / Puerto Rico . He beat Luis Santana from the Dominican Republic , Benedicto Ferreira from Brazil , José Aguilar Pulsán from Cuba and Hugo Hernandez from Argentina . At the 1st AIBA World Cup , which took place in New York in 1979 , he fought his way to the final with victories over Kim In-Chang, South Korea and Pedro Cruz, Puerto Rico, in which he narrowly played against Serik Konakbajew from the Soviet Union 2: 3 judges' votes were lost. Shortly afterwards, he also won on points over his compatriot Donald Curry in New York .

In March 1980 Lemuel Steeples was killed in a plane crash ( LOT flight LO 007 ) in Warsaw, along with many other members of the American national squadron of amateur boxers and his trainer Sarge Johnson .
