In it Eric Allen (born January 5, 1965 in Columbus , Ohio ) is a former boxer from the USA , amateur world middleweight champion from 1986 and world championship challenger of the IBF light heavyweight from 1997.

Amateur career

Allen was American middleweight champion in 1985, where he also defeated reigning National Golden Gloves Champion and later IBF World Champion William Guthrie in the semifinals . He was then invited to the 4th World Championships in 1986 in Reno , where he impressed against Riquerne Berron from the Dominican Republic (5: 0), Nusret Redžepi from Yugoslavia (4: 1), Julio Quintana from Cuba (5: 0) and Henry Mask from the GDR (4: 1) prevailed and thus won the gold medal in the middleweight division.

However, a series of defeats then set in, which threw him from the leading rankings. Among other things, he was eliminated in the semifinals of the US championships of 1987 against Joe Lipsey and lost in the 10th Pan American Games in Indianapolis in the first fight by knockout in the first round against Ángel Espinosa from Cuba. Allen explained himself with the lack of ability to adapt to the fighting style of an opponent ("When i used to go into a fight, i had one style. If that didn't work, i had fold, i had quiet" , interview with the Lexington Dispatch of July 7, 1988).

Allen then worked on these deficits under professional guidance and made an impressive appearance again in mid-1988 when he qualified for the Olympic Trials in July, the national qualification for the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul . He was only defeated in the final against Anthony Hembrick , which is why he was denied an Olympic appearance. Hembrick, however, had little luck in the games; as he missed the bus from the Olympic village to the competition site and therefore did not show up for his fight date, he was disqualified and eliminated without a fight.

Professional career

In 1988 Allen switched to the professional camp and won seven fights in a row, including against the undefeated Eric Cole (4-0) and Gino Calvillo (4-0). In May 1990 he suffered his first defeat when he was defeated by technical knockout against James Williamson (9-4). In October of the same year, he was also just defeated on points against Keith Providence (6-0).

However, he subsequently remained undefeated in 17 fights. He won against Armando Rodríguez (24-4) from Venezuela and the German champion Andreas Marks. On July 19, 1997 he then received a world title chance of the IBF in the light heavyweight division against William Guthrie (23-0), whom he had defeated at the 1985 US championships. This time he lost after three knock-downs by technical knockout in the third round and then ended his career.
