Julio Quintana Martínez
Julio Quintana Martínez (born February 17, 1962 in Pinar del Río ) is a former Cuban boxer .
Career
Julio Quintana comes from a sporty family in Pinar del Río. His father was a professional boxer in the time before the Cuban revolution, but without reaping great merits. He has five siblings, two of whom also boxed. The 1.83 meter tall athlete, who was an excellent stylist, was trained by Dr. Enrique Garmuri trains. He was a member of the Cuban protection and security organs, later joined the Cuban armed forces and studied sport during his career.
Since 1981 Julio Quintana was a member of the Cuban national boxer team. He stayed in Europe in the spring of this year and competed in the Chemistry Cup in Halle (Saale) . There he was defeated in the final of the light middleweight division against Detlef Kästner from the GDR on points (0: 5). In the same year he also started at the "Giraldo-Cordova-Cardin" tournament, a very important tournament organized by the Cuban Boxing Association for Cuban boxers, where he fought his way to the final, in which he lost to Oleg Koliadin from the Soviet Union .
1982 Julio Quintana was Cuban runner-up in the light middleweight division. He lost it in the final against the 1980 Olympic champion Armando Martínez on points. Against the same boxer he was knocked out in the second round in the final of the "Giraldo-Cordova-Cardin" tournament in Guantánamo . For him it was a bitter defeat that prompted him to start in the higher weight classes in the future.
In 1983 he therefore fought two weight classes higher, namely in the light heavyweight division. In this new weight class, he created a surprise at the Cuban championship, because he defeated the reigning world champion in this weight class from 1982 Pablo Romero on points (4: 1) in the final battle . At the "Giraldo-Cordova-Cardin" tournament in Santiago de Cuba in 1983, however, Pablo Ramero retaliated and defeated Julio Quintano in the final on points (5-0). In 1983 he started at the Grad Prix in Ústí nad Labem and lost there in the light heavyweight division against Kurt Seiler from the Federal Republic of Germany on points. Julio Quintana landed a remarkable victory in 1983 in an international match in Camagüey between Cuba and the United States. He beat the later professional world heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield clearly on points in the middleweight division .
In 1984 Julio Quintana lost in the final battle for the Cuban light heavyweight championship against Pablo Romero on points. At the "Giraldo-Cordova-Cardin" tournament he was also scored in the final by this boxer. A start at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles this year was not possible for him or for Pablo Romero because Cuba boycotted these Olympic Games for political reasons.
Also in 1985 Julio Quintana finished in the Cuban championship, where he started in the middleweight division, and in the "Giraldo-Cordova-Cardin" tournament in Ciego de Ávila only the 2nd place. Both times he was beaten by the 1982 middleweight champion Bernardo Comas . At the championship on points and in Ciego de Ávila by disqualification in the 3rd round.
1986 was the most successful year in Julio Quintana's career. Although he had to admit defeat in the final of the Cuban Middleweight Championship again Bernardo Comas on points, but in the "Giraldo-Cordova-Cardin" tournament he won the final over Lino Ramirez on points and thus fought for the starting place in the middleweight division for the world championship in Reno . In preparation for the world championship, he played the Strandja tournament in Sofia and the Grand Prix in Ústí nad Labem. In both tournaments he took 1st place. At the World Cup in Reno he beat Egerton Marcus from Canada (5-0), Dimitri Boliglasow from the USSR (5-0) and Carlos Herrera from Venezuela (4-1) on points. In the semifinals, however, he was defeated by the American Darin Allen on points (0: 5) and therefore had to be content with the World Cup bronze medal. But then he achieved success at the Central American & Caribbean Games in Santiago de los Caballeros . Here he won the middleweight division in the final over Francisco Rosario from the Dominican Republic, clearly on points (5-0).
In the following years he could no longer assert himself in Cuba. In the middleweight division, Ángel Espinosa became the dominant man that Julio Quintana could not defeat. Because of this, he did not get any further appearances at the major international championships.
