Armando Martínez Limendu (born August 29, 1961 in Majagua , Ciego de Ávila ) is a former Cuban boxer . He became an Olympic light middleweight champion in 1980 .

Career

Armando Martínez started boxing as a teenager. He soon performed so well that he was accepted into the Cuban national boxer team as a junior. At the age of 18 he also became a member of the Cuban armed forces, but was released from the military for boxing training. He was a 1.80 m tall, technically mature boxer who fought in the normal display (left-hand boom).

At the age of 18 he was Cuban runner-up in 1979 in the light welterweight division. In the final of this championship he was defeated by José Aguilar Pulsán on points. In the same year he was used in an international match against the United States in Havana in the light middleweight division, two weight classes higher than in the Cuban championship, and came to a point victory over Jeff Stoudemire . In 1979 he also came to a tournament in Europe . He won it at the Grand Prix of Ústí nad Labem in welterweight with a victory in the final over the Soviet athlete Jonow.

In 1980 Armando Martínez became Cuban champion for the first time. In the light welterweight division he defeated José Luis Hernández on points in the final . On another trip to Europe he managed to win another tournament in the light middleweight division in Ústí nad Labem, while surprisingly at the 20th Honved Cup in Budapest he suffered a narrow point defeat (2: 3 judges' votes) against Roland Wandelt from the GDR . Although he only finished 3rd in the "Giraldo Cordova Cardin Tournament of the Cuban Boxing Association in Holguín in the light middleweight division behind his compatriots Manuel Cordero and Alfonso Semanat, he was used at the Olympic Games in Moscow . He justified this trust and won with a points win over Zygmunt Gosiewski, Poland (5: 0), a demolition win in the 1st round over George Kabuto, Uganda , a point win over Francisco de Jesus, Brazil , a demolition win in the 2nd round over Ján Franek , ČSSR and a point victory over Alexander Koschkin , USSR (4: 1) Olympic champion .

In 1981 Armando Martínez had to play at the World Cup in Montreal in the light middleweight division after victories over Percy Rackley from Australia , Michail Tachow from Bulgaria a . U Jin-choi, South Korea suffered a surprising loss on points in the final battle against Canadian Shawn O'Sullivan and only came in second. But he won the 16th championship of the armed forces of the Warsaw Pact countries in Pécs with a demolition victory in the 1st round in the final over Niculae Ciobaru from Romania .

In 1982 Armando Martínez won his second Cuban championship title with a points win in the final over Julio Quintana Martínez (5-0). He defeated the same boxer in the final of the "Giraldo-Cordova-Cardin" tournament in Guantánamo . He was also the 1982 winner of the Central American & Caribbean Championships in Havana in the light middleweight division, defeating José Luis Steven from Venezuela on points in the final. The highlight of 1982 was for Armando Martínez, however, the participation in the world championship in Munich . He defeated there in light middleweight Srba Stankovis from Yugoslavia , Detlef Kästner from the GDR a . Sandor Hranek from the CSSR on points. In the semifinals he came to a victory without a fight because Mikhail Tachow could not play against him due to an injury. In the final it came with the fight against Alexander Koschkin to the revenge from the Olympic Games 1980. This time Koschkin was the luckier one, because he was awarded a 3-2 point victory. Armando Martínez therefore had to be content with the title of runner-up world champion.

After 1982 Armando Martínez never found the shape of the years 1980 to 1982. He only came on the podium at a Cuban championship in 1985, where he finished 3rd behind Ángel Espinosa and Orestes Solano , and in 1989, where he was in Final against his old rival José Luis Hernández lost. In 1984, however, he had celebrated a tournament victory at the "Giraldo Cordova Cardin" tournament in Sancti Spíritus in the light middleweight division, where he scored Orestes Solano in the final. A start at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles was out of the question for him because Cuba boycotted these games for political reasons.

The last top results he achieved were two third places in the "Giraldo-Cordova-Cardin" tournaments in 1988 in Las Tunas and in 1989 in Havana in the light middleweight division. Both times, José Guzmán and José Luis Hernández placed in front of him.
