Ján Franek

Ján Franek (born April 14, 1960 in Gbeľany , Okres Žilina ) is a former Czechoslovak light middleweight boxer. He won an Olympic bronze medal in 1980.

Ján Franek was around 1.77 m tall during his competitive career and achieved his greatest successes in 1980. In February he defeated the Hungarian Imre Némedi in an international match. In June he won the Czechoslovak Championships and started in August at the 22nd Olympic Games in Moscow . There he came through three premature wins against Benedetto Gravina from Italy , Scheliu Stefanow from Bulgaria and Wilson Kaoma from Zambia in the semifinals, where he finally lost himself prematurely to the Cuban Armando Martínez and thus retired from the games with a bronze medal. In November he won the Finnish Tammer tournament in Tampere .

In September 1981 he won the Václav Procházka tournament in Ostrava , where he was able to prevail against the starters from Cuba, Bulgaria and the Soviet Union. In June 1984 he won another international match against Germany, by knocking out Gerhard Schubert.

From July 1991 to April 1992 he played eight professional fights in Italy, Germany and Austria. His most significant win was a knockout win in round 5 against the international German champion Niyazi Aytekin .

He is the older brother of boxer Michal Franek . His daughter is Miss Slovakia 2009, Barbora Franeková.
