Jerzy Rybicki (born June 6, 1953 in Warsaw ) is a former Polish boxer . He was Olympic champion in 1976 in Montreal in light middleweight .

Career

Jerzy Rybicki started boxing in 1968 at Gwardia Warsaw , the club he was a member of until the end of his career in 1983. He was trained there by Michal Szczepan and Tadeusz Walasek . His first major success was winning the Polish championship in the junior light middleweight division in 1971. In 1972, he finished third in the senior welterweight division after losing in the semi-finals to Andrzej Stawski. In 1974 he was then with a point victory over Zbigniew Kicka for the first time Polish champion in the senior middleweight division. By 1981 he won this title a total of six times in three different weight classes.

He made his debut in international championships at the 1974 World Cup in Havana . He started there in the light middleweight division and met after victories over Keith Neil from Guyana and Wilfredo Guzman from Puerto Rico in the quarterfinals on Anatoly Klimanow from the USSR , against whom he lost on points.

In 1975 he started at the European Championships in Katowice . He had trained in welterweight and won his first medal at an international championship with a third place. On the way there he defeated Luigi Minchillo from Italy by technical knockout in the 2nd round and Vyacheslav Bodnia from the USSR on points. In the semifinals he lost against the eventual European champion Kalevi Marjamaa from Finland on points.

1976 Jerzy Rybicki lost at the Polish welterweight championship against Jozef Stachowiak by techn. KO in the first round, because he could not continue boxing because of an eyebrow injury. But he recovered from this injury in time for the Olympic Games in Montreal and started there in the light middleweight division. He was by no means a favorite in his weight class in Montreal and yet he celebrated with victories over Charles Walker from the USA , who narrowly fell 3-2 with the judges' votes, another point win over Wilfredo Guzman, a surprise victory over the Soviet favorite Viktor Savchenko (3 : 2 again very close) and a superior 5-0 point win over Tadija Kacar from Yugoslavia winning the gold medal .

After this great triumph, his next start at an international championship was the 1977 European championship in Halle . He won there in light middleweight over Günter Rostankowski from the GDR and Miroslav Pavlic from Yugoslavia on points and failed in the semi-finals to Viktor Savchenko, against whom he lost on points. He came in 3rd place, with which he won his second European Championship medal with the bronze medal.

Jerzy Rybicki also failed against Viktor Savchenko at the 1978 World Cup in Belgrade , against which he even suffered a bitter knockout defeat in the first round in the semifinals. Before that he had defeated Alfredo Lemus from Venezuela on points and Markus Intlekofer from Germany by breaking off in the 2nd round.

At the European Championships in Cologne in 1979 , Jerzy Rybicki only played two fights. In the second round he won over Detlef Kästner from the GDR by breaking off in the 2nd round and in the quarterfinals he lost to Markus Intlekofer on points and thus remained without a medal.

At the end of his international boxer career, he also started at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow and won a bronze medal there again . He won in the round of 16 against Tarmo Uusivirta from Finland because he had to be taken out of the ring due to an injury, then beat Peter Odhiambo from Uganda in the quarterfinals and lost in the semifinals to his old rival Viktor Savchenko by RSC in the 3rd round because of a Eyebrow injury.

After the Olympic Games in Moscow, Jerzy Rybicki ended his international boxer career. He completed a trainer training at the Sports University (AWF) in Warsaw and was a trainer at Gwardia Warschaus from 1984 to 1989. From 1989 to 1993 he was the trainer of the Polish national team of amateur boxers.
