Markus Intlekofer
Markus Intlekofer (born January 29, 1956 in Hildesheim ) is a former German boxer . In 1977 he was vice European champion in the light middleweight division .
Career
Markus Intlekofer grew up in Hildesheim and played football there as a teenager at SC Concordia Hildesheim . Soon, however, he came into contact with boxing and switched to this sport. He became a member of the Boxing and Gymnastics Club (BGK) Hildesheim . As a teenager and junior he was multiple North German champion. In the course of time, the good-looking blond boy developed into an outstanding boxer, who impressed primarily with his technical skills.
As a senior, he surprised the professional world when he was nineteen-year-old German champion in 1976 in the light middleweight division. Markus Intlekofer was working as a post office clerk at the time, but after winning this title he committed himself to better training opportunities for four years with the Bundeswehr . He then boxed for the BSV Hannover in the Bundesliga. In 1977 he was again German light middleweight champion. He was then used at the European Championships that year in Halle (Saale) . There he scored points over Robert Pfitscher , Austria , Charles Malarkey, Scotland and Kalevi Marjamaa , Finland and was thus in the final battle. There he was unlucky, because he was caught in the first round by his opponent, the hard-hitting Viktor Savchenko from the Soviet Union with heavy hits and was knocked out. The vice-European title was the consolation for this defeat.
In 1978 he started at the World Cup in Belgrade . He came there in the light middleweight division to a point win over Ole Svendsen, Denmark , but had to be taken out of the ring in the quarterfinals in the fight against Jerzy Rybicki from Poland due to an injury. He finished 5th. In the same year Markus Intlekofer was in the final of the CISM military world championships in Lagos , where he lost on points against Ebrahimza Kafshduz from Iran .
At the European Championships in 1979 in Cologne , he came in light middleweight to point wins over Heinrich Hug from Switzerland and Jerzy Rybicki. For his semi-final fight against Viktor Savchenko he could not compete because of a hand injury. He won an EM bronze medal with it. In 1980 he scored points over Detlef Kästner from the GDR in the final of the Intercup in Duisburg . A start at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow was not possible for Markus Intlekofer because these games were boycotted by the German NOK.
Markus Intlekofer ended his sporting career at the age of 24 and, after the end of his engagement with the Bundeswehr, devoted himself to training as an insurance salesman. In a later interview he said that he actually regretted it, because he could certainly have achieved some sporting successes, but on the other hand, advancing his career was extremely important for him. He found his way back to boxing in 2000, where he took over the training of young people at BGK Hildesheim.
