Anatoly Mykolajowytsch Klimanow ( Ukrainian Анатолій Миколайович Кліманов , Russian Анатолий Николаевич Климанов Anatoly Nikolayevich Klimanow * 28. October 1949 in Kiev , † 2. March 2009 ) was a Soviet - Ukrainian boxer . He was European light middleweight champion in 1973 and light heavyweight in 1975 .

Career

Anatoly Klimanov, a native of Ukraine, started boxing in 1959. He initially belonged to the Avangard sports community and became a member of the Kiev Army Sports Club as an adult . He weighed approx. 75 kg and started his time as an active player in the weight classes of medium, medium and light heavyweight. In the Soviet Union he faced a number of enormously strong opponents, such as B. Valeri Tregubow , Rufat Riskiev , Vyacheslav Lemeschew , Leonid Shaposhnikov , Vladimir Tarasenkow and Dawit Kwachadze . It is all the more remarkable that in his career he was twice Soviet champion and twice European champion . In 1974 he won a medal at the World Championships in Havana and in 1976 he represented the USSR at the Olympic Games in Montreal . But there he could not win a medal.

After a successful junior period, Anatolij Klimanow started in 1970 for the first time in a Soviet senior championship. He reached the semi-finals in the light middleweight division, in which he lost to Valery Tregubov . Also in 1971 he was in this championship in the semifinals, in which he lost to Alexander Schipilow. In 1971 he started at an international tournament in Leipzig , where he defeated Hans-Joachim Brauske from the GDR on points in the middleweight finals .

In 1972 he retired from the Soviet middleweight championship by losing to Rufat Riskiev in the quarterfinals. In 1973 he was first Soviet master through a techn. Knockout victory in the 3rd round over Rufat Riskiev. He then also prevailed at the national elimination tournament for the European Championships by winning points over Rufat Riskiev and Bogdan Grizak. At the European Championships in 1973 in Belgrade , he celebrated light middleweight victories over Eward Hayden, Ireland , Christer Ottosson, Sweden , Peter Tiepold , GDR, and Wiesław Rudkowski , Poland , and was thus European champion in a superior style.

In 1974 Anatoly Klimanov lost in the final of the Soviet middleweight championship against his long-term rival Rufat Riskiev on points. But he was used at the world championship in Havana in the light middleweight division and fought his way up to the semi-finals with victories over Charlton Bent, Jamaica , Luis Lamadrid, Puerto Rico , and Jerzy Rybicki , Poland, in which, however, he was against Rolando Garbey from Cuba lost on points.

In 1975 Rufat Riskiev was the last stop at the Soviet Middleweight Championship. He lost to this in the semifinals with 2: 3 judges' votes. The Soviet coaches were so convinced of him that they used him in the light heavyweight championship this year in Katowice . He also fulfilled expectations in this weight class and became European champion for the second time with victories over Janusz Gortat , Poland, Ottomar Sachse , GDR, and Georgi Stoymenow , Bulgaria , both of which he defeated 5-0 judges' votes.

In 1976 Anatoly Klimanov could not take part in the Soviet championship due to injury. But he was in the Soviet team at the Olympic Games in Montreal . In the light heavyweight division he won there in his first fight against Roger Fortin from Canada clearly on points. In the last sixteen he lost to the later professional heavyweight boxing champion Leon Spinks from the United States on points, which meant he was eliminated and only finished in 9th place.

In 1977 Anatoly Klimanov was back in the finals of the Soviet championship. In the middleweight division he was defeated by Leonid Schaposhnikov just on points. This year he was able to celebrate another win at an international championship. In Havana he was in the light heavyweight division with a points win over the Cuban Sixto Soria winner at the 13th championships of the armies of the Warsaw Pact countries.

In 1978, at the end of his career, he was once again Russian champion. In the final of the light heavyweight division, he defeated Dawit Kwachadze on points.

In his long career, Anatoly Klimanov scored 385 victories in 403 fights.
