Peter Tiepold
Peter Tiepold (born November 15, 1945 in Berlin ) is a former German boxer . He won a bronze medal in the light middleweight division at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich .
Career
Peter Tiepold started boxing as a teenager. Due to his success in the youth field, he was delegated to SC Dynamo Berlin , the sports club of the protection and security organs of the GDR. His trainer there was Horst Gülle. In the international boxing ring, he first appeared in 1964 when he represented the GDR in Zinnowitz in a junior international match against Poland and won a point win over Limanowski in the welterweight division.
In 1966, Peter Tiepold was light welterweight with a victory over Heiko Winter from SC Magdeburg for the first time GDR champion. He won this title six more times up to 1974. In 1973 he defeated the Olympic champion of 1968 Manfred Wolke from Frankfurt (Oder) in the final of the light middleweight division .
In 1967 he started at the European Light Welterweight Championship in Rome . He defeated Jürgen Voss from the Federal Republic of Germany by technical knockout in the 3rd round and Petar Stoichew from Bulgaria on points. In the semifinals he was defeated by Valery Frolov from the USSR , but won an EM bronze medal . He was also there at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico , the first in which the GDR provided its own team. In the light welterweight division he won points over Wladimir Kucera from the ČSSR (5: 0 judges' votes) and Jaime Lozanow from Mexico (5: 0). In the quarterfinals he met the Pole Jerzy Kulej , against whom he lost just on points (2: 3 judges' votes). Kulej became Olympic champion in the course of the tournament .
At the European Championships in Budapest in 1969, Peter Tiepold retired after winning points over Gerd Puzicha from Germany in the round of 16 by losing points to Ljubinko Veselinovic from Yugoslavia and only came in 9th place in the light welterweight division.
From 1971, Peter Tiepold could no longer bring the weight limit for the light welterweight (63.5 kg) and therefore switched to the welterweight (up to 67 kg body weight). In this weight class he only came in 3rd place at the GDR championship and was not nominated for the European championship in Madrid . In 1972 he moved up a further weight class and now started in the light middleweight division (up to 71 kg body weight). In this weight class, he qualified for the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich . In Munich, he won the Olympic boxing tournament over Ion Györfi from Romania (4: 1), Mikko Saarinen from Finland (5: 0) and Emetrio Villanuevo from Mexico (5: 0) on points and thus already had a bronze medal by reaching the semi-finals won. It stayed with this medal, because he lost in this semi-final against Wiesław Rudkowski from Poland on points (1: 4 judges' votes).
In 1973 Peter Tiepold won another medal. He came in 3rd place at the European Championships in Belgrade in the light middleweight division. In the semifinals he had to admit defeat to the Soviet boxer Anatoly Klimanov on points. The last international championship he took part in was the World Cup in Havana , which was held for the first time this year. He won in Havana first by knockout in the 2nd round over Harald Sixt from Germany, but had bad luck against Cuban favorite Rolando Garbey in the round of 16 because he had to be taken out of the fight due to an injury. So only the 9th place remained for him.
He then completed his training as a trainer and worked as a trainer in various positions until his retirement in 2008.
