Peter Rieger (boxer)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Peter Rieger (born January 5, 1944 in Neisse , Opole district , Upper Silesia ) is a former German boxer .

Career

Peter Rieger came to Berlin as a child as a displaced person . He started boxing there as a teenager and became a member of TSC Berlin . In 1962 he made his first appearance on the international boxer scene when he represented the GDR in junior country matches against Poland . He was unable to take part in international junior championships because none had taken place at the time.

In 1966 he reached third place in the GDR senior light welterweight championship behind Peter Tiepold from SC Dynamo Berlin and Heiko Winter from SC Magdeburg . In 1967 he was second at this championship after a defeat in the final against Peter Tiepold. In 1968 he succeeded with a victory over Ulrich Beyer from ASK forward Berlin to become GDR light welterweight champion.

For the Olympic Games taking place in Mexico City in 1968, Peter Tiepold was planned in the light welterweight division. But Peter Rieger got the chance to take part in these lightweight games. He managed to bring the required weight of 60 kg. In Mexico, of course, he had no luck, because in his first fight he met the Yugoslav Zvonimir Vujin , one of the best light and later light welterweights of the world in the world. Peter Rieger delivered an excellent fight to Zvonimir Vujin and lost only narrowly and controversially with 2: 3 judges' votes. He ended up in 17th place with all the losers of his round.

In the following years, Peter Rieger no longer had a chance to compete in international championships for the GDR because he had excellent experts in his weight class in Peter Tiepold and Ulrich Beyer . But in the GDR championship in 1969 he finished second behind Peter Tiepold and in 1972 he was third behind Ulrich Beyer and his club mate Siebert.

After retiring from his career, he worked as a trainer and proved his ongoing fitness when he fought an exhibition match against Rene Weller , who was two years his junior, in 2005 at the age of 61 and even had a slight advantage in this match, which of course was unrated.
