Ulrich Beyer

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ulrich Beyer (born July 23, 1947 in Röddelin , Brandenburg , † October 20, 1988 in Frankfurt (Oder) ) was a German boxer . He was European amateurs champion in 1971 in the light welterweight division.

Career

Beyer started boxing as a teenager. After his first successes in the national junior division, he was delegated to the Vorwärts Frankfurt (Oder) army sports club . There the 1.72 meter tall athlete developed into one of the world's best light welterweight boxers.

As early as 1965 he was used in some country battles of the GDR junior national relay. In 1968 he took part for the first time in the GDR senior championships and was defeated in the final of the light welterweight division against Peter Rieger from TSC Berlin . Even in 1969, when he was third and in 1970, when he was defeated in the final against Peter Tiepold from SC Dynamo Berlin , he was not yet GDR champion. In 1971 he managed to win this title for the first time with a victory in the final against Dieter Jakob from SG Wismut Gera . By 1977 he won this title six more times, always at light welterweight.

In 1969 Ulrich Beyer's international career began. That year he won the 7th Army Championships of the Warsaw Pact armies in Kiev . In the final of the light welterweight he defeated the Czech Blaha. In 1970 he won both the Chemistry Cup in Halle (Saale) and the TSC tournament in Berlin. In the final fights, he defeated Oleg Lifanow and Alexander Zaizew, two Soviet athletes.

In 1971 he started at the European Championships in Madrid . He defeated there in the light welterweight Gerit van Deutom from the Netherlands by disqualification in the 1st round, Bogdan Jakubowski from Poland by technical knockout in the 2nd round, Michael Kingwell from England by disqualification in the 2nd round and Calistrat Cuțov from Romania on points . To the surprise of all experts, he won the European championship title as a newcomer to international championships.

At the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, Ulrich Beyer met the American Sugar Ray Seales in his first fight and was defeated by just 2: 3 judges' votes on points. He was eliminated in the round of the last "32" and came together with all the losers of this round only on 17th place. Seales was then Olympic champion with four more victories .

In 1973 Ulrich Beyer won again in Frankfurt (Oder) at the championships of the armies of the Warsaw Pact and took third place at the European championships in Belgrade in the light welterweight division. He had the bad luck that he had to be taken out of the ring due to an injury in his semi-final fight against Marijan Beneš from Yugoslavia .

In 1974 Ulrich Beyer also won a medal, the bronze, at the first world championships in Havana . He lost there in the semifinals after three victorious fights to the all surprising and hitherto completely unknown Ayube Kalule from Uganda , who then also won the world title.

In 1975 he came in the final of the TSC tournament in Berlin to a TKO victory in the first round over Jochen Bachfeld from Schwerin , who became Olympic welterweight champion a year later . At the European Championships this year in Katowice he was defeated in the semifinals against Valery Limasov from the Soviet Union on points. With the bronze medal he won his third medal at international championships.

While trying to win an Olympic medal, Ulrich Beyer failed in 1976 in Montreal . Again it was an American who blocked his way in the quarter-finals. Sugar Ray Leonard defeated him clearly on points (0: 5 judges' votes). Ulrich Beyer came in fifth.

1977 was the last year in Ulrich Beyer's career as an active boxer. At the European Championships taking place in Halle (Saale) he managed to show off again. He defeated there in the light welterweight Joao Gato from Portugal , Valeri Grischkowets from the USSR and Memet Bogujevci from Yugoslavia and was the clear favorite in the final fight against the surprise man Bogdan Gajda from Poland . However, Gajda surpassed himself in this final battle and defeated Ulrich Beyer with 4: 1 judges' votes on points, who had to be satisfied with the European Championship silver medal . Gajda never succeeded in achieving such a great success later.

Ulrich Beyer started a coaching career at ASK Vorwärts Frankfurt (Oder) after 1977. Together with Manfred Wolke he trained, among others, Henry Maske in his amateur days.
