Wiesław Ksawery Rudkowski (born November 17, 1946 in Łódź , † February 14, 2016 in Warsaw ) was a Polish amateur boxer in the light middleweight division.

Boxing career

Rudkowski was around 1.80 m tall during his competitive career and boxed for RKS Łódź and Legia Warsaw . He was 1963 Polish junior champion in featherweight, 1964 Polish junior champion in lightweight, 1966 Polish champion in welterweight, and from 1967 to 1975 nine times in a row Polish champion in light middleweight.

In welterweight he started at the 17th European Championships in 1967 in Rome , where he was defeated in the preliminary round against Manfred Wolke . At the 19th Summer Olympics in Mexico City in October 1968 , he fought in the middleweight division and won his first fight against Charles Amos from Guyana (knockout), but then lost to Alexei Kisseljow from the Soviet Union (0: 5).

At the 19th European Championships in Madrid in 1971 , he won a bronze medal in the light middleweight division. He defeated Franz Csandl from Austria (knockout), Mikko Saarinen from Finland (5-0) and Hakkı Sözen from Turkey (5-0) before losing to Svetomir Belić from Yugoslavia in the semi-finals . He achieved the greatest success of his career in the light middleweight division at the 20th Summer Olympics in 1972 in Munich , when he won against Antonio Castellini from Italy (5-0), Nayden Stanchev from Bulgaria (5-0), Rolando Garbey from Cuba (4th : 1) and Peter Tiepold from the GDR (4: 1) advanced to the final. There he was only barely defeated by the German Dieter Kottysch (2: 3) and thus won the silver medal.

On April 18, 1973 he won in a match against Chicago Golden Gloves Champion Fred Reed in the USA . In June of the same year he won another silver medal in the light middleweight division at the 20th European Championships in Belgrade . After victorious fights against Franz Dorfer from Austria (knockout), Tomáš Kemel from the Czech Republic (5-0) and Sandu Tirila from Romania (5-0), he was only defeated in the final against Anatoli Klimanow from the Soviet Union. He achieved one last significant success in the light middleweight division at the 21st European Championships in 1975 in Katowice : By winning against Alexander Harrison from Scotland (5-0), Tomáš Kemel from the Czech Republic (5-0), Franz Dorfer from Austria (5-0) and Viktor Savchenko from the Soviet Union (5-0) won the gold medal.

He died on the night of February 13-14, 2016 in Warsaw after a serious illness.
