Franz Csandl (born September 24, 1948 ) is a former Austrian boxer .

Amateur career

Franz Csandl boxed for BC Wien and was trained by Walter Kedzierski. He was Austrian light middleweight champion in 1971 and 1972 and took part in the 19th European Championship in Madrid in June 1971 , but was defeated there in the first fight by the Poland and later bronze medalist Wiesław Rudkowski .

Csandl also took part in the 20th Summer Olympics in 1972 in Munich , where he met the 1974 world champion from Cuba, Rolando Garbey , in the first fight and was defeated on points.

Professional career

In October 1972 he began his professional career and won his first fight by knockout in the first round against the German Hans Michel. In his first eleven fights, all of which he was able to win, he also won against former World Cup challenger Matt Donovan, former EM challenger Jean Baptiste Rolland and three times against German Gunter Valtinke.

1974 followed victories against the Italian champion Domenico Tiberia, the later African champion and World Cup challenger Mimoun Mohatar, the French champion Francis Vermandere and the German champion Randolph Hombach. In August 1974 he defeated the experienced American Manuel González, who had already boxed three times for a world championship belt. Csandl had thus reached the top of the European rankings and received a title chance in the light middleweight division.

On January 7, 1975, in the Wiener Stadthalle, he met the Spanish title holder José Manuel Durán (53 wins - 3 losses), who had ended the boxing career of the last Austrian European champion Hans Orsolics with a knockout in November 1974 . The very hard fight went over the full 15 rounds, with Csandl also going down in the 14th round and losing on points in the end. Manager Willi Zeller caused a bit of a scandal after the fight when he simply took the winner's laurel wreath and hung it around his protégé Franz Csandl.

Franz Csandl, however, managed to fight his way back to the top; In his next fight he defeated the former North American champion Denny Moyer, who then ended his career. On May 31, 1975, he also defeated the US former world champion Eddie Perkins , who then also retired from active boxing.

On November 4, 1975, he was given the chance to win the EBU European title in light middleweight against the German Eckhard Dagge in the Wiener Stadthalle . At the official weigh-in on the day of the fight, Csandl had also set a record before a championship fight in boxing; The examining doctor determined that Csandl had a pulse of only 40 beats per minute, the previous record was 48. In the subsequent fight against Dagge, Csandl could not bridge the distance to the German, suffered an eye injury in the second round and lost in the seventh round early.

After a five-month break in the ring, he was able to defeat the American Gene Wells by knockout, but lost on June 18, 1976 on points to Clement Tshinza and then ended his career.
