José Manuel Durán (born October 9, 1945 in Madrid ) is a former Spanish boxer , European champion and world champion of the WBA in the light middleweight division.

Amateur career

He was a participant of the European Championships in Rome in 1967 , but where he was defeated in the first fight by the Dane Jørgen Hansen on points. At the 5th Mediterranean Games in September of the same year in Tunis he was able to win the bronze medal in the welterweight division.

In 1968 he won the Spanish Championships and took part in the Summer Olympic Games in Mexico City , where he lost in the second fight on points against the later bronze medalist Vladimir Musalimov .

Professional career

He had already contested his first professional fight in November 1967. After the Olympics he turned pro and won his first 22 fights in a row, 11 of them prematurely. In June 1970 he suffered his first defeat when he lost on points to two-time European champion Jean Josselin (61 wins - 8 losses). However, he won the rematch in May 1971 on points.

In addition, he defeated u in further battles. a. the Cuban Ángel "Roberto" García (110-47), the later British champion Bobby Arthur (16-5), the Spanish champion Antonio Torres (55-4), the former World Cup challenger Domenico Tiberia (63-15) and Giancarlo Garbelli (72-13).

On June 30, 1973 he was the Spanish light middleweight champion in Burgos and defeated until the beginning of 1974 a. a. also ex-European champion Bo Högberg (36-4) and the French Francis Vermandere (24-1).

Durán had boxed his way to the top of the European rankings and on June 7, 1974 got the chance to win the EBU light middleweight title against the French title holder Jacques Kechichian . Durán won the fight over 15 rounds unanimously on points, Kechichian then ended his career.

In the following title defenses he defeated in Berlin the unbeaten German Eckhard Dagge (13-0) by TKO in the eleventh round and two-time former European champion Hans Orsolics (42-7) by TKO in round 14. In January 1975, he won also in Vienna against the unbeaten Franz Csandl (18-0) on points, although he also had him on the ground in the 14th round. In February 1975 he won against the German champion Peter Scheibner on points and thus established himself at the top of the world rankings.

On May 7, 1975 he boxed in Monte Carlo against the Brazilian Miguel de Oliveira (41-1) for the world title of the WBC in the light middleweight division, but was subject to this over 15 rounds on points. Only a month and a half later he tried to secure the EBU title again, but this time was defeated prematurely by the current title holder Eckhard Dagge.

After five development fights, in which he remained undefeated, he got another chance at the world title of the WBA in the light middleweight division. He defeated the Japanese title holder Kōichi Wajima (31-4) by knockout in the 14th round in Tokyo , but lost the title in the first defense on October 8, 1976 just on points to Miguel Ángel Castellini (61- 5).

After another loss to WBC World Champion Rocky Mattioli (51-4), he ended his career in May 1978.
