Tamae Watanabe

Tamae Watanabe ( Japanese 渡 辺 玉枝 , Watanabe Tamae ; born November 21, 1938 Yamanashi Prefecture ) is a Japanese mountaineer.

After graduating from Tsuru University, she worked as a clerk in a Kanagawa Prefecture Township . During this time she started climbing. In 1977 she climbed Mount McKinley . This was followed by the Mont Blanc , the Kilimanjaro and Aconcagua .

After her retirement, she returned to her homeland and in May 2002, the oldest woman at the time, climbed Mount Everest . Ten years later, in May 2012, she set this world record by climbing Mount Everest again, now at the age of 73. In 2004 she was awarded the "Uemura Naomi Bōkenshō" ( 植 村 直 己 冒 険 賞 ).
