Ulli Kaden (born March 9, 1959 in Munich ) is a former GDR boxer, European champion in 1987 and 1989 and nine-time GDR super heavyweight champion.

Career

His first international success came with second place at the European Junior Championships in Dublin in 1978 . From 1980 to 1988, Kaden was East German champion in his weight class nine times in a row .

When he first participated in the European Championships in Tampere in 1981 , he failed in the semifinals at the eventual winner Francesco Damiani and thus took third place. In 1983 in Varna he was able to advance to the final with a victory over Alexander Miroschnitschenko , but did not play against Damiani there. In 1987 in Turin Ulli Kaden was finally able to become European champion for the first time, in the final fight he beat the USSR boxer Alexander Jagubkin on points. He successfully defended the title at the next European Championship in Athens in 1989 .

In addition, he won the international boxing tournament for the chemistry cup in Halle (Saale) in 1982, 1986 and 1989 . In 1986 he also took part in the amateur world championships in Reno , but retired there in the second round after a point defeat against the Cuban Teófilo Stevenson . Kaden took part in world cup tournaments twice. In 1983 in Rome he was third with a semi-final defeat against Francesco Damiani, in 1987 he won in Belgrade with victories against Lennox Lewis , Azis Salihu and Vyacheslav Jakowlew.

During his participation in the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul , he lost prematurely in the second round to Lennox Lewis, who then also won the gold medal. Kaden won three times in his career against the three-time Olympic champion Teófilo Stevenson, but with six defeats.
