Filip Hrgović (* 4. June 1992 in Zagreb , Croatia ) is a Croatian professional boxer in the heavyweight division . As an amateur, he was, among other things, youth world champion 2010, European champion 2015 and bronze medalist at the 2016 Olympic Games.

Amateur career

Filip Hrgović is Croatian Junior Champion 2008 and Croatian Junior Champion 2009. His first major success was winning the 2010 World Youth Championships in Baku , where he defeated Joseph Parker and Tony Yoka , among others .

At the 2011 World Championships in Baku, he defeated Mikhail Bakhtidze and Mihai Nistor , before being eliminated in the quarterfinals in the fight for a medal place with 16:20 against Ivan Dytschko . Also in the European Olympic qualification 2012 in Trabzon , he was eliminated at 14:15 against Magomed Omarow in the quarter-finals, after he had previously defeated Kaspar Vaha and Ņikita Maculevičs.

He ended the 2013 World Championships in Almaty after losing to Roberto Cammarelle in the quarter-finals , after having prevailed against Mirsochid Abdullajew and Gu Guangming.

He achieved his greatest success to date at the 2015 European Championships in Samokow . With victories against Dean Gardiner , Michail Bachtidse, Mihai Nistor and Florian Schulz , he became European champion and qualified for the 2015 World Championships in Doha . There he beat Petar Belberow in the quarter-finals, but then lost just 1: 2 in the fight for a medal place against Tony Yoka.

He won a bronze medal at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro . He defeated Ali Eren Demirezen and Lenier Pero , which made him move into the semifinals. There he was eliminated 1: 2 against the eventual gold medalist Tony Yoka.

In addition, he is Croatian champion from 2011 to 2016.

World Series of Boxing

Filip Hrgović is considered one of the most successful boxers in the World Series of Boxing (WSB) founded in 2010 . In the first 2010/11 season he won the WSB title with Paris United and repeated this success in 2012/13 and 2014/15 with the Astana Arlans team . He also won the individual ranking in 2011/12 and in 2015, with seven victories in a row, won the only WSB Olympic place in the super heavyweight division for the 2016 Olympic Games. In total, he won 25 of 29 fights in the WSB.

Professional career

In 2017 Hrgović signed with Sauerland Event . At the end of September of that year he successfully made his professional debut against the Brazilian Raphael Zumbano (record: 39-15) with a technical knockout in round 1. His second fight, which he knocked out against Pavel Šour (6-0) in the first round won, took place on October 27 of the same year.

At the end of January 2018, he defeated the British Tom Little (10-4) in a fight by technical knockout in the fourth round. The following month, Hrgović won against the Irish Sean Turner (12-1) over eight rounds unanimously on points and therefore had to cover the full distance for the first time. In June 2018 he defeated the Mexican Filiberto Tovar (9-0) by TKO in the fourth round.

With a knockout victory in the third round against Amir Mansour (23-2) on September 8, 2018, he won the title of WBC International Heavyweight Champion. In December 2018, he defeated Kevin Johnson (33-11) unanimously over eight rounds.

In February 2019 he signed a co-promotion contract with Matchroom Boxing from the English promoter Eddie Hearn . On May 25, 2019, he won his US debut in Oxon Hill by TKO in the first round against Gregory Corbin (15-1).

In August 2019 he won by knockout in the third round against the Mexican Mario Heredia (16-6). He scored another victory by knockout in the third round in December 2019 against Eric Molina (27-5). Molina has already been a World Cup challenger to Deontay Wilder and Anthony Joshua .
