Deontay Wilder Leshun (* 22. October 1985 in Tuscaloosa , Alabama ) is an American professional boxer and former WBC - World heavyweight champion . As an amateur, he won an Olympic bronze medal in the heavyweight division (from 91 kg) in 2008 .

Amateur career

Deontay Wilder visited in Tuscaloosa , the Central High School , where he was a versatile athlete who basketball , football , baseball and track and field operation. The 2.01 m tall young man's goal in those years was to become either a basketball or football professional. When he became the father of a girl in 2005, he made money as a driver. He then decided to become a boxer and completed his first fight on October 19, 2005. He was a member of the Skyy Boxing Club ; his trainer is Jay Deas to this day.

With victories at the Alabama Golden Gloves and the Southern Golden Gloves , he qualified for the National Golden Gloves in Chattanooga in 2007 . With little experience of 14 fights, he became 2007 heavyweight champion with victories over Mario Morales, Marc Ward, José Flores, the former Junior World Champion Isiah Thomas and David Thompson. Then he also convinced at the US Championships in Colorado Springs . He was there with victories over Quantis Graves , Adam Willett (without a fight) and James Zimmermann American heavyweight champion. Subsequently, he defeated the American elite of heavyweights for the third time at the US Olympic preliminary qualifications (Trials) in Houston . He won against Anthony Tettis, Joe Guzman and twice against Quantis Graves, thus securing participation in the 2007 World Championships in Chicago and the US Olympic qualification.

At the World Heavyweight Championship in Chicago, Wilder lost the first fight against Poland's Krzysztof Zimnoch on points (20:23). He was more successful at the test tournament for the 2007 Olympic Games in Beijing . He won there over Leilei Wang from China (25:17) and Wadim Lichman from Russia (+16: 26) on points, but was unable to compete in the final against Daniel Price from England due to an injury. In a subsequent international match against Kazakhstan in Zunyi / China, Deontay Wilder defeated the Kazakhs Chamasat Gelitschkanow by breaking off in the third round.

In 2008, Deontay Wilder focused entirely on qualifying for the Olympic Games in Beijing and the preparation for it. He therefore did not start at the National Golden Gloves and the US championships. He acquired the right to start the Olympic Games in Beijing at the American qualifying tournament in Port of Spain / Trinidad . He defeated Deivi Julio Blanco from Colombia (6: 5), Jorge Quinones from Ecuador (9: 9, 20:20, 4: 1) and Rafael Lima from Brazil (6: 5) each just on points. In the final battle he was then clearly defeated against Osmay Acosta from Cuba (1:12). By reaching the finals, he qualified for the 2008 Olympic Games.

On the trip to Russia of the US national relay, Deontay Wilder surprisingly managed a narrow point win (11:10) in Magnitogorsk against Russian vice world champion Rachim Tschakchijew , then lost in Novosibirsk to Yevgeny Romanov by breaking off in the third round. In the international match between the USA and the Dominican Republic in Chattanooga, he defeated Juan de Jesús Pareles by breaking off in the third round and in the last Olympic test of the USA national relay he won over the Chinese Yushan Nijati by breaking off in the second round.

At the Olympic Games, Wilder won the bronze medal. In the last sixteen he defeated the Algerian Abdelaziz Toulbini with 10: 4 points. Against the Moroccan Mohamed Arjaoui , he narrowly prevailed in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals against the reigning world champion Clemente Russo from Italy he was clearly inferior and lost with 1: 7 points.

Professional career

After participating in the Olympics, Deontay Wilder turned professional. He signed contracts with Shelly Finkel and Golden Boy Promotions , Óscar de la Hoya's promotion company . He played his first professional fight under the name "The Bronze Bomber" , as part of the fight between Jeff Lacy and Jermain Taylor, against Ethan Cox, which he was able to defeat by a technical knockout in the second round. In December 2012, he won the American-Continental Championship of the WBC with a difficult knockout win in the third round against the unbeaten Kelvin Price (15-0).

On April 27, 2013, he defeated 2000 Olympic super heavyweight champion Audley Harrison by tKo in the first round. The former WBO - World Champion Siarhei Liakhovich he knocked on August 9, 2013 classic in the first round. He also succeeded on March 15, 2014 against the world-class heavyweight Malik Scott . This win made him the number 1 challenger to the WBC belt . He was able to win this unanimously on points against Bermane Stiverne on January 17, 2015 , despite an injury to his right batting hand that he had sustained early in the fight, making him the first US heavyweight world champion since 2007. Stiverne, who was rated as very good Taken, had to go down for the first time in his entire career at the end of the second round.

Up until his victory over Stiverne, Wilder won all of his previous 32 fights by knockout. None of his opponents got past the fourth round.

Wilder was thus heavyweight world champion with a knockout rate of 96.97% at one of the most important associations ( WBC ); No other boxer has succeeded in this weight class before him. On April 9, 2016, the British Anthony Joshua broke this record when he stopped the American Charles Martin in round 2 in the IBF World Championship fight at The O2 Arena in London and was world champion with a 100% knockout rate was in heavyweight.

Wilder's current knockout rate (as of April) is 95%

He won his first title defense in June 2015 with a severe knockout in round 9 against former North American champion Eric Molina. Molina went down once on lap 4 and twice on lap 5. Wilder boxed almost completely without cover and rarely used his punching hand.

Three months later he defended his belt against the 1.96 m tall French left wingman Johann Duhaupas , whom he suffered the first knockout defeat in the 11th round. The tough Frenchman, whose chin is considered to be one of the toughest and who has never had to go down in his career so far, took a lot of tough hits overall. In this battle, Wilder surprised many boxing fans and boxing experts when he proved for the first time that he can box very well and generally very variably in the infight and in the half distance; For example, he finished with some hard uppercuts.

In its third voluntary title defense Wilder met on 16 January 2016 Barclays Center in New York district of Brooklyn , on Poland Artur Szpilka , who until then had only lost one fight. In the 9th round Szpilka was severely knocked out after a hard hit and was unconscious for several minutes. He was carried out of the ring and immediately taken to the hospital. Until the knockout, the southpaw, trained by Ronnie Shields , boxed very well and gave the title holder a good fight.

A fight against Alexander Powetkin was scheduled for May 21, 2016 . This fight had to be postponed because a positive doping test was taken from the Russian beforehand. Wilder then declared that he no longer wanted to box against Powetkin because he could not show any tolerance for doping sinners. The WBC followed up Wilder's request.

On July 16, Wilder defended his belt against the American Chris Arreola in Birmingham, Alabama . Wilder was superior from the start and drove his opponent through the ring. By the end of the 4th round he had Arreola close to knockout. This hung on the ropes and was able to avoid a premature end with the gong. After the 8th round, Arreola's trainer Henry Ramirez threw in the towel, so Wilder won the fight by surrender . In this competition Wilder sustained a serious injury to his right hand, so that he had to take a break for several months.

Deontay Wilder originally wanted to box against Andrzej Wawrzyk from Poland on February 25, 2017 after recovering . However, this was proven doping in January, so that Wilder's management had to find a replacement at short notice. The American Gerald Washington was signed as a new opponent . Wilder won the fight against Washington in the fifth round by technical knockout.

A similar process took place in the planned fight against the Cuban Luis Ortiz , which was scheduled for November 4th. A doping test showed Ortiz had consumed a prohibited substance and was banned from the fight. Bermane Stiverne, who had also planned a fight for November 4th, was chosen as a substitute opponent. In addition, Stiverne was the actual mandatory challenger from Wilder. On November 4th, the fight against the Canadian broke out. Deontay Wilder defeated Bermane Stiverne in the first round.

The fight against Ortiz was rescheduled on March 3, 2018 at the Barclays Center. Wilder had chosen Ortiz to voluntarily defend his title, with which he collected plus points from the boxing fans - because with the previously unbeaten King Kong , Ortiz's fight name, he had chosen a world-class heavyweight and thus ran a high risk of losing the fight .

The almost 39-year-old Cuban southpaw, who had won 343 of 369 fights among the amateurs, won the first four rounds due to his extremely good boxing skills. In the 5th round Wilder scored a knockdown and won this round with 10: 8 points. In the 7th lap, Ortiz put Wilder into distress with a flurry of blows, but Wilder survived the lap without precipitation. When the very aggressively boxing Cuban began to tire in the last phase of the fight, Wilder hit a right hook that caused Ortiz to go down for the second time. With a right uppercut through Wilder, the now visibly battered opponent went down for the third time in the 10th round, which caused referee David Fields to stop the fight immediately. Wilder emerged as the winner through a technical knockout. Until then, Wilder was ahead of all three judges.

In the same year a title union with the WBA, IBF and WBO world champion Anthony Joshua was planned. However, since both sides could not agree, they were looking for another opponent. Since Klitschko- enchanter Tyson Fury made his comeback on June 9, 2018 after a break of more than two and a half years against Sefer Seferi and defeated Francesco Pianeta on August 8 of the same year , he was placed in the top 15 by the WBC Association and came as Opponent in question. An offer was made to Fury, which he approved. The fight took place on December 1, 2018 at the Staples Center . Both boxers fought for the first time in this multi-purpose arena in Los Angeles , California . The fight went the full distance and ended in a draw. Hardly anyone thought this was possible in advance, especially since Wilder had such a high knockout rate and Fury was inactive for so long. Wilder knocked Fury to the ground in round 9 and in round 12. Wilder boxed another world-class man voluntarily and defended the WBC title for the eighth time in a row.

On November 23, 2019 Wilder - half way behind on points on points - defeated Cuban Luis Ortiz in a rematch with a classic knockout in the 7th round.

On February 22, 2020, he lost the rematch against Tyson Fury by technical knockout. in the seventh round and with it at the same time the world title of the WBC and his unbeatenness.

Boxing style

Wilder has enormous punching power, especially in his right hand, and for a boxer his size (2.01 m) is characterized by an unusual speed, especially a high punching frequency. He is also quite flexible for his height. He also knows how to use his enormous range (2.11 m). With his strong leading hand, he manages very well to keep his opponents at a distance and to put them under pressure with fast swings. He is said to have a "killer instinct" because he can punch extremely hard and fast flurry of blows. Overall, his boxing style is considered unorthodox.
