Luis Ortiz (born March 29, 1979 in Camagüey , Cuba ) is a Cuban heavyweight boxer .

Amateur career

He started boxing at the age of ten. His match record as an amateur is 343 wins versus 26 losses. His greatest international success was winning the 2006 World Team Championship (Boxing World Cup) with Cuba in Baku, the previous year he had won the silver medal with the Cuban national team behind Russia in Moscow. In 2006 he was Cuban heavyweight champion at the Playa Girón tournament. Odlanier Solís , who had dominated this weight class for a long time (Cuban champions 1999-2001 and 2003-2004) had already fled Cuba at this point, as had Yoan Pablo Hernández , who had defeated Ortiz in the 2005 final.

Professional career

In 2008 Ortiz fled Cuba to switch to the professional camp. He had to leave his wife and daughter behind for this. As a professional boxer based in Florida, he started with a record of 15: 0 wins, including 13 Kos. His best-known opponent was the American Bert Cooper , whom he defeated in the second round with a technical knockout. On June 17, 2011, he defeated Luis Pineda in Panama City and won the WBA Fedlatin Championship.

The WBA started a fight against the Russian Alexander Povetkin for 2014 , which should be about the vacant regular WBA World Championship. However, Povetkin didn't want to box against Ortiz and preferred to play against Manuel Charr .

In 2014 Luis Ortiz secured the WBA interim title with a win over Lateef Kayode .
