Lateef Kayode (born March 3, 1983 ) is a Nigerian professional cruiserweight boxer . Kayode is trained by four-time Trainer of the Year Freddie Roach.

Boxing career

Kayode made his professional boxing debut in Washington, DC on August 15, 2008 and won it against the American Mike Miller. He won all subsequent build-up fights and got his first big fight against Matt Godfrey . The fight took place in Santa Ynez on June 10, 2011 . Kayode dominated the fight from the start, knocking Godfrey down on rounds one, five, and nine. This recovered again and again, so that Kayode finally won the fight clearly on points.

On March 10, 2012 it was officially announced that Kayode will play his first world championship fight against the American Antonio Tarver . The fight was scheduled for June 2, 2012 and took place in Oakland , California . Tarver went into this fight as the favorite but remained too inactive in the first few rounds, so Kayode could score here. In the later rounds, Kayode was hit badly a couple of times but never went down. The fight ended after 12 rounds with a multiple vote, after a judge rated the fight for Kayode and Tarver and the third a draw.

After 2 fights that he was able to win by knocking out, Kayode competed on September 11, 2014 against Luiz Ortiz for the interim world heavyweight title of the WBA. In this fight he went down in the first round. When he let himself be pushed into the corner in the course of the first round and received several blows there without defending himself, the referee broke off the fight and Kayode initially lost through TKO in the first round. The result of this fight was canceled because a urine sample from Ortiz tested positive for nandrolone . The title was stripped of Ortiz and the fight was not counted. Kayode thus remained officially unbeaten.

Kayode got his third chance at a world championship title a year later. This time he started again in the cruiserweight division and met the world champion Denis Lebedev there . Lebedev caught Kayode on lap 7 with a left hook. Kayode went down and was counted. He continued the fight but could not recover from this hit. After just 14 seconds of the eighth round, the next precipitation occurred. The referee let Kayode fight on, whereupon Lebedev immediately stormed towards him and knocked him to the ground again with several hits. The referee counted Kayode up to 8 this time, but let him fight again. Kayode remained on his feet, but had nothing to counter the blows from Lebedev. When Kayode leaned on the ropes and Lebedev was able to attack without resistance, the referee finally stopped the fight.
