Manuel Charr (born October 10, 1984 in Beirut , Lebanon ; bourgeois Mahmoud Omeirat Charr ) is a Syrian professional boxer who fights with a German boxing license. He's since November 25, 2017 regular WBA - World heavyweight champion behind the WBA super champion Anthony Joshua (the status of the Super Champions is ranked higher).
Life
Charr, the son of a Lebanese mother and a Syrian father, grew up in Beirut. In 1989 his mother fled to Germany with six of her eight children. His father was killed in the Lebanese civil war . The family lived in the Berlin district of Wedding and in the Essen district of Katernberg . Charr currently lives in Cologne .
Conflicts with the judiciary
Charr was arrested and charged in September 2006 on suspicion of attempted manslaughter . Together with his boxing colleague Alexander Abraham , he was involved in a dispute in which Charr, according to his own testimony, defended himself in self- defense. The Berlin district court acquitted the two boxers.
In early 2011, Charr was arrested in a nationwide raid against a gang of car smugglers. The case was closed and Charr after three weeks from the detention dismissed.
Assassination attempt on Charr
On the night of September 2, 2015, Charr was shot and seriously injured in a kebab shop in Essen . After an emergency operation, his life was out of danger. Charr named insults as a motive. Yousseff Hassan Al-Zain , wanted by a public manhunt , turned himself in to the police on September 14; he was sentenced to five years in prison for dangerous assault.
Controversy over alleged German citizenship
In 2015, Manuel Charr applied for a German passport; this application was rejected. After his 2017 World Cup victory against Ustinow, he was the first German heavyweight world champion since Max Schmeling to celebrate. When asked if he had a German passport, Charr replied: “I am 1000 percent German. In the hustle and bustle, I couldn't get to pick up my passport. I have a German passport. It is available and in office, yes, I swear it! ". The Cologne tabloid Express had previously quoted Manuel Charr as follows: “My naturalization procedure is on hold due to possible criminal proceedings. This is currently being clarified by my lawyers - and then I hope to finally be able to pick up my passport. But ultimately it's just a piece of paper. What counts is that I feel like a German from the bottom of my heart. ”There are no procedures that could prevent the issue of his passport, Charr said later on Sky. He will now be on vacation, “then I'll go to the office and get my passport”.
Finally he confessed that he did not have a German passport. After his World Cup fight, Charr told the Express that he had a Syrian passport and wanted to "apologize to the German people". But he will submit a new application for naturalization.
In an interview with the Turkish news agency IHA, Charr announced shortly after his World Cup fight that he would be traveling to Turkey, handing over his world championship belt to “our President” Recep Tayyip Erdoğan “as a token of my gratitude for the reception of Syrian refugees” and finally in Syria “for To contribute to peace between Turkey and Syria ”. Charr competed against Alexander Powetkin on May 30, 2014 with a Syrian flag and anthem.
In April 2019 he announced that he would compete under his maiden name Mahmoud Charr in the future.
Martial arts career
Beginnings
Charr started martial arts in 2001 as a kickboxer in a private school in Essen. Three years later he switched to the professional Masters Gym in Duisburg . There he began a career as a muay thai kickboxer . From 2003 to 2005 he won two German championships and one European title.
He also worked as an amateur boxer at the boxing club Gelsenkirchen-Erle 49 . In his amateur career to January 2005, Charr recorded 16 wins, 13 of them prematurely, in a loss. In 2004 he became West German Champion.
Professional career since 2005
In 2005 Charr turned pro. The Sauerland stable signed him through a training camp at the Max Schmeling Gym in Berlin ; there he was looked after by trainer Ulli Wegner . He kicked u. a. as a sparring partner of Nikolai Walujew , Alexander Powetkin and John Ruiz . In 2007 he switched to the Universum boxing stable and from then on was looked after by Fritz Sdunek . From February to November 2011 Charr fought for the Sturm Box promotion of the professional boxer Felix Sturm . On November 18, 2011 in Cuxhaven , Charr won the vacant “International Silver Belt” of the WBC against the Brazilian Marcelo Nascimento with a technical knockout after the eighth round. In 2011 he left Sturm Box-Promotion and started his own company Diamond Boy Promotion .
After 21 professional fights without defeat, Charr had to admit defeat on September 8, 2012 in the fight for the WBC world title against Vitali Klitschko due to a serious injury to the eye. For this fight he had signed Vardan Zakarjan as coach. On December 21, 2012 he defeated Konstantin Airich by knockout in the first round. In February 2013 he won against Yakup Sağlam due to the injury-related abandonment of the opponent after the second round.
For June 29, 2013, a fight Charrs against David Haye was planned in Manchester , which Haye had to cancel due to a hand injury. On May 30, 2014 Charr fought against Alexander Powetkin in Moscow for the vacant WBC International Champion title, which he lost in the seventh round by knockout. After a win on October 24, 2014 against Michael Grant , he lost on April 10, 2015 against Johann Duhaupas by majority decision. After he won his next fight against the Australian Alex Leapai , he lost on August 22, 2015 in Grozny to the undefeated Latvian Mairis Briedis by knockout in the 5th round. Charr made his comeback on June 4, 2016 in Kassel. Here he beat Belarusian Andrei Mazanik in the first fight after his gunshot wound after seven rounds by TKO.
In May 2017, Charr received two artificial hip joints due to hip dysplasia .
Manuel Charr reached fourth place in the WBA ranking for a fight for the vacant so-called regular WBA title because number one Luis Ortiz was suspended for doping and because number three Fres Oquendo could not agree on an opponent in time. That is why Charr's fight against number two, Alexander Ustinov , came about. On November 25, 2017, Charr defeated Ustinow in the fight for the vacant World Championship title of the WBA by a unanimous decision on points and thus became the first Arab world heavyweight champion and the first from Germany after Max Schmeling . Compared to then, there are now four associations recognized by the IBHOF with five possible titles. The title of super champion is weighted higher at the WBA . Since then he has not had to defend the title and has not played a fight.
Positive doping test from August 31, 2018
A few days before a planned WBA title fight against Fres Oquendo in September 2018 , Charr tested positive for drostanolone and epitrenebolone based on a urine sample (A sample) from August 31, 2018 . The fight was then canceled.
Manuel Charr has announced a blood test result from the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (Vada). Accordingly, his doping test was negative, he wrote on his Facebook page and published the corresponding Vada document. However, the document only confirms a negative test for the growth hormone HGH. The blood A sample was not examined for the anabolic steroids epitrenbolone and drostanolone detected in the urine by Vada according to media reports.
Due to procedural errors when opening the B sample, Charr's suspension was lifted and he was allowed to keep the world title.
