Sherman Williams (* 1. September 1972 in Freeport ) is a Bahamian boxer in the heavyweight division .

Professional career

Williams made his debut as a professional boxer in 1997 and started with two defeats in the first three fights in 1997. Four years passed before his first major title fight. On May 20, 2001 he was defeated in the fight for the NABF championship to the experienced American Obed Sullivan by a split decision . Two years later, on September 2, 2003, he got his next chance for a North American championship belt, but lost again. In the fight for the IBF's own USBA championship, this time he was clearly defeated by Tye Fields on points. However, only three months later he was able to win the WBA's Caribbean World Cup belt for the first time . On December 6, 2003 he defeated Miguel Otero in the fourth round by technical knockout. Two years later he also won the WBC belt for the Caribbean region. On December 10, 2005 he won against Willie Perryman unanimously on points.

On January 19, 2007 he was intercontinental champion of the NBA, the US-wide sub-association of the WBA . Here he beat Ralph West in the third round KO. On November 22, 2011, he fought against 49-year-old Evander Holyfield for the less important WBF belt. However, this fight was stopped after three rounds because of a severe head crash in the previous round without evaluation. Williams achieved his greatest success to date on June 28, 2012. At the age of 38, he decided the fight for the WBO belt for the Asia-Pacific and Chinese regions against the experienced New Zealander Chauncy Welliver after twelve rounds for himself.
