The sports and congress hall ( SKH for short ) is a multi-purpose hall in the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania state capital Schwerin . It was opened in 1962 and was the largest and most modern hall in the GDR . Today it is a listed building.
The sports and congress hall is owned by the state capital, but is operated by C&M Concert und Management GmbH, as is the Schwerin open-air theater .
history
The sports and congress hall was built in 1958 and completed four years later based on the drafts of the Rostock architect Hans Fröhlich and the designs by E. Beckmann, F. Breuer and P. Peters. The construction costs amounted to 8.2 million marks. On September 12, 1962, the hall was inaugurated as part of the "Lambrechtsgrund Sports Forum". With an area of 5600 m², the Schwerin sports and congress hall was the largest hall in the GDR. In 1965 about 200 visitor parking spaces were created opposite the hall, which were later supplemented by a large parking lot with a capacity for 800 cars.
The state capital Schwerin is the owner of the sports and congress hall , and plans to privatize the multi-purpose hall from 1992 due to excessive maintenance and renovation costs . In 1997 it was handed over to the private Schweriner Hallengesellschaft (SHG), which, however, filed for bankruptcy in 1998. As a result, the hall will again be owned by the city in 2002. The state capital was still looking for a privately oriented operating company, but it wanted to remain the owner itself. This was followed by a Europe-wide tender to take over the hall, which was followed by 62 applications.
2008 until today
Heitkamp-Development GmbH from North Rhine-Westphalia emerged from the applicants and took over the entire sports forum on May 1, 2008, consisting of the sports and congress hall, the Lambrechtsgrund stadium, the house of sports, the volleyball hall (Palmberg- Arena), a multi-purpose hall, an athletics hall, the boarding school of the sports high school and a parking lot. C&M GmbH leases the sports and congress hall and has been operating it ever since. The tendered project, which Lambrechtsgrund Betriebsgesellschaft mbH has taken on, includes the modernization of the sports and congress hall, the new construction of the volleyball hall, the Olympic base , the boarding school of the sports high school and the new construction of the canteen.
In 2009 the hall was extensively modernized. Further measures are implemented every year in order to always be technically up-to-date and to maintain or improve competitiveness. In doing so, however, the 60s style must always be preserved due to the requirements of the monument protection.
Premises and use
The Schwerin sports and congress hall can be divided into different room and seating options thanks to a flexible room-in-room concept. The total area of the Great Hall is 2000 m². The maximum capacity is designed for up to 8000 visitors. The tier seating alone offers space for up to 5200 people. The variability not only enables concerts, shows, musicals and sports events to be held, but also trade fairs, conferences and company celebrations.
The sports and congress hall has a drivable asphalt floor, which makes it easier to set up large productions and trade fairs. At sports events, it is possible to lay out various sports surfaces, for example football turf, sandy floors and handball floors. So also for the regular home games of the Mecklenburg bulls .
In addition to the Great Hall, there are various ancillary rooms, such as the conference rooms and artists' changing rooms in the backstage area. A catering kitchen is also available. There is currently a permanent catering partner who is responsible for catering to the visitors.
Concerts by Herbert Grönemeyer , Joe Cocker , Modern Talking , André Rieu , Udo Lindenberg , Andrea Berg , Helene Fischer , PUR , Johannes Oerding , Mark Forster , DJ Bobo , Peter Maffay , Marteria , The Kelly Family and Andreas Gabalier took place. Sports events such as the Universum Fight Night, ARD Boxing, World Boxing Super Series , the 2013 European Women's Volleyball Championship and the Night of Freestyle have also taken place here.
