Pedro Carrión Sago (born June 5, 1970 in Cuba ) is a Cuban heavyweight boxer.

amateur

As an amateur, Pedro Carrión boxed super heavyweight and became Junior World Champion in Istanbul in 1994. Nevertheless, Carrión was overshadowed by Alexis Rubalcaba in the 1990s , even if he was able to beat him several times towards the end of his career. At the Amateur World Championships 2001 in Belfast he finished third with a win against the American Jason Estrada (USA) RSCO-3 and a loss against the Ukrainian Olexij Masikin (20-26).

In the semi-finals of the amateur world championships in Bangkok in 2003 he defeated Sebastian Köber (26-18), but had to admit defeat to Alexander Powetkin (27-29) in the final. In 2005 he finally ended his amateur career because he had reached the maximum age limit for amateurs.

Professional career

In February 2006, Carrión made his professional debut at the age of 35. He lives in Berlin and is under contract with the small boxing stable "Wiking Boxing Team", his trainer is Hartmut Schröder.

In his third professional fight in May 2006 he lost on points (majority decision) against the Lebanese Manuel Charr . The often sedate-looking Charr received many easy hits in the course of the fight. His coach Uli Wegner even said during a break in the ring: “We're not wrestling here. If you continue like this, it was the last fight for me. ”The fight remained close, also because Carrión was the more variable boxer in his first fight over eight rounds despite physical problems. In the end, however, Charr was awarded the flattering victory.

In April 2007 he won the International German Heavyweight Championship by winning ten rounds against Turkey's Özcan Çetinkaya . Then Carrión did not fight for more than two years. After Willi Fischer canceled a fight against the 41-year-old South African Francois Botha planned for October 24, 2009 in Dessau due to injury, Carrión was signed as a substitute opponent. Despite Carrión's superiority, the fight ended in a controversial draw (114: 114, 115: 115, 114: 113).
