Alexis Rubalcaba Polledo (* 10. September 1972 in Pedro Betancourt , Matanzas , Cuba ) is a former Cuban amateur boxer in the super heavyweight .

Career

After the accidental death of the 1992 Olympic champion, Roberto Balado (who had also beaten Rubalcaba), Cuba had a problem in the very highest weight class for years, the so-called super heavyweight among amateurs . They had three equally strong people with Michel López , Pedro Carrión and the tall, muscular 2.04 meter man Rubalcaba, but in contrast to the class below, called heavyweight among the amateurs, up to 91 kg, in which Cuba completely dominated for years and celebrated four Olympic victories in a row with Félix Savón and Odlanier Solís , but did not celebrate the major successes at world level.

Rubalcaba first appeared internationally in 1996. In his success at the chemistry cup in Halle , he managed an early win against Timo Hoffmann , and he also won the Cuban championship with a victory over Carrión. He won against Sjarhej Lyachowitsch in 1996 and lost in a tournament in the Czech Republic in 1998. He then took part in the Olympic Games in Atlanta in part. In the first fight he defeated Paolo Vidoz prematurely, but was then surprisingly eliminated in the quarterfinals against the completely unknown Paea Wolfgramm from Tonga .

In 1997 he achieved one of his greatest successes with second place at the World Championships in Budapest . He defeated Sinan Şamil Sam without a fight , won by knockout against defending champion Alexei Lesin , defeated Vidoz in the semifinals, but lost the final battle against Georgi Kandelaki from Georgia .

In 1998 he won the chemistry cup again with victories over Kay Ahrendt and Andreas Sidon . At the Goodwill Games in New York he defeated Dominick Guinn , but then lost to the Italian Vidoz , as he did at the World Cup in Beijing .

When he won the title at the Cuban Championships in 1999, he defeated his competitors López and Carrión each by KO. He also defeated the Kazakhs Muchtarchan Dildabekow at an international tournament in Cuba. in Winnipeg he won the Pan American Games . At the most important tournament of the year, the World Championships in Houston , he was eliminated in the quarterfinals with his third defeat in the fifth match against Vidoz.

In 2000 he won his fourth national championship, again with victories over López and Carrión, as well as the 1996 junior world champion, Freddy Soto. He took part in the Olympic Games in Sydney , where he achieved a spectacular knockout against Cengiz Koç in the first fight . But like four years before, he did not get past the quarter-finals and was defeated by the Kazakhs Dildabekow on points.

As a result, he was not nominated internationally in 2001. In 2002 he managed a knockout against Dildabekow, but he was defeated in 2002 Carrion (against whom he scored two wins and four losses in his career) and López (whom he had previously beaten three times) and then ended his career.
