Artur Szpilka (born April 12, 1989 in Wieliczka ) is a Polish boxer .

Career

Artur Szpilka's career began when a boxing coach saw him in a hooligan fight between the rival football clubs Wisła Krakow and Cracovia and invited him to boxing training.

He played his first professional fight on October 18, 2008 against the German Senol Cente, whom he defeated on points. On June 25, 2011 he played his first heavyweight fight and won in the first round by knockout. His opponent was Ramiz Hadziaganovic from Austria .

In June 2012, Szpilka was supposed to be the sparring partner of Wladimir Klitschko for two weeks , who was preparing for his fight against Tony Thompson on July 7, 2012 . Ultimately, it didn't happen.

In June 2012 he defeated Gonzalo Basile (balance: 54-6) and became Youth Silver and Baltic Silver title holders of the WBC . Wins against Jameel McCline (41-11), Mike Mollo (20-3) and Taras Bidenko (28-5) followed. He won the interim Baltic Championship of the WBC in June 2013 against Brian Minto (37-5).

He suffered his first defeat in his 17th fight on January 25, 2014 against Bryant Jennings (17-0), when he lost to TKo in the tenth round. In November 2014 he defeated Tomasz Adamek (49-3) and became Polish and international IBF heavyweight champions.

On January 16, 2016, he boxed in New York's Barclays Center for the WBC world heavyweight title, but was knocked out by US title holder Deontay Wilder (35-0) in the ninth round.

On July 15, 2017, he also lost prematurely to the Polish-born Adam Kownacki (15-0).
