Ronnie Shields

Ronnie Shields (born June 6, 1958 in Port Arthur , Texas , USA ) is a former American boxer and current boxing coach.

Amateur career

The left boxing Shields had a very successful career as an amateur. In 1974 he was National Junior Olympics champion in the featherweight . The following year he won the Golden Gloves tournament in the same weight class . In 1976 and 1978 he was again Golden Gloves winner in the light welterweight division .

Professional career

In 1980 Shields began his professional career successfully. He boxed the pros only in light welterweight. Shields was able to make his first six fights victorious. In November 1983 he won the vacant North American championship title of the North American Boxing Federation (NABF) when he beat Saoul Mamby on points. On July 15 the following year, he competed against Billy Costello for the WBC World Championship and lost by unanimous decision.

In 1986 Shields fought for the second time for the World Championship belt of the association WBC, this time against Tsuyoshi Hamada . Again, Shields failed due to a split judge's decision.

In 1988 Shields ended his career.
