Vanes Martirosyan (* 1. May 1986 in Abovyan , Armenian SSR as Wanes Norikowitsch Martirosjan ) is an Armenian-American boxers in the light middleweight . He is a former WBO NABO , NABF , WBA International, WBC Silver and WBO Intercontinental Champion. He is signed to Top Rank and is being promoted by Bob Arum .

Life

Martirosyan was born on May 1, 1986 in the Armenian city of Abovyan. His father Norik Martirosyan , who was also a boxer, worked for an industrial company. Martirosyan has three siblings, a younger brother, an older brother and a younger sister.

His family moved to Glendale , California when he was four years old. He started boxing at the age of seven after his father found out a gym was nearby.

Amateur career

In 2004 Martirosyan defeated the Mexican Tijuana at the qualifying tournament for the Olympics , which in the same year in the Greek capital Athens were held, Andre Berto and thereby secured a spot in the US Olympic team, in which, inter alia, Andre Ward and Andre Dirrell started. At the Olympic Games he defeated the Algerian Benamar Meskine with 45:20 on points in his first fight and was defeated in the second fight to the two-time Cuban world champion Lorenzo Aragón , who emerged as a silver medalist , with 11:20 on points.

Martirosyan, fighting name "Nightmare" (nightmare), beat a number of highly valued opponents, including Austin Trout (he defeated him three times), Andre Berto and Timothy Bradley .

He ended his amateur career with 120 wins and 10 losses. Vanes was able to avenge all of his defeats, except for those against Nick Casal and Lorenzo Aragon, in rematches.

Professional career

Martirosyan started his professional career in 2005. He was initially coached by Freddie Roach . He moved to Ronnie Shields for a short time , but returned to Freddie Roach in 2009 and has been coached by him ever since.

Martirosyan was able to make all of his first 32 fights victorious. Most of the victories were knockout victories . In his 23rd fight on November 10, 2012, he met the Cuban amateur world champion from 2005 and later WBA world champion Erislandy Lara . The fight ended in a "technical draw" in the 9th round.

The following year Martirosyan beat Ryan Davis in round 2 and lost to the unbeaten Demetrius Andrade (19-0-0) for the vacant WBO world title by a split judge's decision. In his next fight he reported back with a unanimous victory on points against Mario Alberto Lozano and thus won the vacant intercontinental title of the WBO, which he defended against Willie Nelson by a unanimous victory on points. At the end of March 2015 he suffered his second defeat in a non-title fight when he had to admit defeat to the unbeaten Jermell Charlo just on points in a 10-round fight .
