Andre Berto (born September 7, 1983 in Miami , Florida ) is a Haitian / American boxer, former WBC world champion and former IBF welterweight champion.

amateur

Berto, who has three brothers and three sisters and boxed in about 200 amateur fights, won the National Golden Gloves in 2001 and 2003 and the PAL tournament twice. In 2002 and 2003, he took second place in the US championship.

His greatest amateur success was a third place in the welterweight division at the 2003 Amateur World Championships in Bangkok , where he lost to the Cuban Lorenzo Aragón on points in the semifinals .

In the US Olympic elimination in 2004 he was disqualified when he threw his clinging opponent Juan McPherson to the ground. He then competed for Haiti, but was narrowly eliminated in the first round.

professional

In 2004 he became a professional welterweight and quickly became popular with his attractive style. Some experts only criticize his defense. In September 2007 he won an elimination match between the WBC and IBF associations against David Estrada and thus secured the right to box against the title holder of the WBC or IBF. He then defeated the experienced German Michel Trabant prematurely. On June 21, 2008 he fought against the Mexican Miguel Angel Rodriguez for the vacant title of the WBC. Berto won this fight by a technical knockout in the seventh round. He then defended the title against ex-world champions Steve Forbes, Luis Collazo, Juan Urango, Carlos Quintana and the previously undefeated Freddy Hernández five times successfully. On April 16, 2011 he lost the belt after a point defeat to Victor Ortiz . But already on September 3, 2011 he defeated the reigning IBF world champion Dejan Zavec by tKo in round 5, inflicted the Slovenian the first premature defeat and thus became world champion again. The revenge against Ortiz was supposed to take place on June 23, 2012, but the fight was called off because Berto's drug test in May was positive for nandrolone .

In the fight for the interime WBC World Cup on November 24, 2012 in California, he lost to Robert Guerrero on points. On July 27, 2013 he lost against the Mexican Jesús Soto Karass for the first time by knockout in the twelfth round.

In March 2015 he defeated the American Josesito López in the fight for the WBA interim world championship . He lost on points to Floyd Mayweather Jr. (48-0) in September 2015.

He won the long-awaited rematch against Victor Ortiz (31-5) in April 2016 with a knockout in the fourth round.
