Josesito López (born July 19, 1984 in Riverside , California as José Manuel López ) is an American professional boxer of Mexican descent.

Boxing career

He started boxing at the age of eight and has played 69 amateur fights, of which he won 56. At the age of 18, he turned pro in 2003 with the Southern California promoter Thompson Boxing Promotions . He won his debut on February 8th in Las Vegas by TKo in the first round against the later Minnesota State Champion Allen Litzau. In his following twelve fights he came out eleven times as the winner, while he also defeated the Mexican champion Mauricio Bórquez twice. His only defeat until then was in his third fight against debutant Rodrigo López.

On April 25, 2005 he won the WBC Intercontinental Mundo Hispano Super Featherweight Championship against Gilberto Leon and defended the title three months later against Leonardo Resendiz. On September 23, 2005, he won the WBC Super Featherweight Junior World Championship by winning points against José Tula and on February 17, 2006, winning the WBC Continental American lightweight championship against Gerardo Zayas. He suffered a setback in April 2006 when he lost to Wes Ferguson just on points (2-1 judge's decision). In July 2006, his fight against Sammy Ventura ended worthless after he was injured in the first round by an accidental headbutt.

In his following six fights he was again unbeaten. His most significant win was that against Tyrone Harris (balance: 21-3) in November 2007. In April 2008 he lost again by a majority decision on points against Edgar Santana, although he had this twice on the ground. With six more wins, including against Patrick López (15-1) and Marvin Cordova (21-1), he was able to box on January 28, 2011 against Mike Dallas (17-0) for the NABF North American Light Welterweight Championship and won the Fight by knockout in the seventh round.

On September 17, 2011 he was again defeated by majority decision against Jessie Vargas (16-0). In June 2012 he defeated the former WBC world champion Victor Ortiz (29-3) in a powerful fight . The corner of the ring gave up the fight at the end of the ninth round after Ortiz suffered a broken jaw. López was then ranked fourth in the world by the WBC.

On September 15, 2012, he boxed in Las Vegas against Saúl Álvarez (40-0) for the WBC World Light Middleweight Championship, but lost by TKo in the fifth round. López was only able to impress with good actions at the beginning of the second round, but at the end of this round he himself went down with a heavy liver hook and was counted to nine. It was also only the second precipitation of his boxing career. In the third round López went down again with a punch combination with a final liver hook and was counted to eight. On the fourth lap, López took a low blow from Álvarez, which gave him a short break for regeneration. A subsequent hail against Álvarez, he answered with a series of blows that brought López to the ground again. In the fifth round López took another heavy hit and was finally taken out of the fight by the referee around ten seconds before the end of the round.

He then only got back into the ring on June 8, 2013 in California against Marcos Maidana (33-3), but went down against the Argentine in the sixth round and was taken out of the fight by the referee after further hits in this round. In December 2013 he defeated the world championship challenger Mike Arnaoutis (24-9) and in April 2014 Aarón Martínez (19-2) both prematurely. In September he also defeated Rafael Cobos (15-4) unanimously.

On March 13, 2015 he lost prematurely to Andre Berto (29-3). The fight was about the interime WBA welterweight championship. In April 2018 he won unanimously against Miguel Cruz (17-0). On January 26, 2019, he lost in the fight for the WBA welterweight championship on points against Keith Thurman (28-0).
