Jessie Vargas (born May 10, 1989 in Los Angeles , California ) is an American professional boxer of Mexican descent, former world champion of the WBA and IBO light welterweight, as well as former world champion of the WBO welterweight.

Career

He came to the United States with his parents and two siblings at the age of six, attended Palo Verde High School in Las Vegas, and began boxing at the age of eight. His greatest successes as an amateur were winning the Junior National Golden Gloves in 2002 and 2005, as well as winning the Police Athletic League (PAL), which is known in the USA, in 2005. He also achieved second place in the light welterweight division at the National Golden Gloves 2007 in Chattanooga and also second place in the light welterweight division at the Mexican Championships 2007 in Ciudad Victoria . From late 2007 to mid-2008 he boxed for the Mexican national team. For this he took part in the 2007 World Championships in Chicago and the American Olympic qualifications in 2008 in Guatemala City and Port of Spain , but without reaching the medal ranks.

In 2008 he switched to the pros and won his debut on September 5th in Nevada by knockout in the first round against Joel González (record: 1 win - 0 defeats). He then beat a number of other build-up opponents, as well as boxers with positive records such as Anthony Lenk (5-0), Robert Luna (5-0) and Ernesto Zavala (21-4). He defeated the former IBO world champion Daniel Sarmiento (34-13) in September 2010 with a knockout in the first round. He was also able to beat former WBA world champion Vivian Harris (29-5) early in the first round in April 2011. Also in 2011 he was able to prevail against the former Colombian World Cup challenger Walter Estrada (39-14) and against the powerful Mexican "Riverside Rocky" Josesito López (29-3).

In 2012 he won all of his four fights against Lanardo Tyner (25-6), Steve Forbes (35-10), Aaron Martinez (18-1) and Vito Gasparijan (14-2), each unanimously on points. On March 16, 2013, he boxed in California against the also unbeaten Nigerian whale Omotoso (23-0, 19 knockout) and won over twelve rounds unanimously on points. He then received the Continental Americas welterweight title from the WBC . Almost seven months later, he also defeated Ray Narh (26-3) from Ghana unanimously on points.

On April 12, 2014 he fought in Las Vegas for the world title of the IBO and WBA light welterweight against the Russian title holder Chabib Allachwerdiew (19-0). Jessie Vargas was able to prevail over twelve rounds unanimously on points. He won his first title defense on August 2, 2014 on points against Anton Novikov (29-0). In November 2014 he defeated Antonio DeMarco (31-3) unanimously.

In June 2015 he lost on points to Timothy Bradley (31-1). He won the WBO welterweight title prematurely on March 5, 2016 against Sadam Ali (22-0). On November 5, 2016, he lost his WBO welterweight title unanimously on points against Manny Pacquiao (57-6).

After beating Aaron Herrera (33-7), he boxed a draw against Adrien Broner (33-3) in April 2018 . He boxed another draw in October 2018 against Thomas Dulorme (24-3). In February 2020 he lost on points to Miguel Ángel García (39-1).
