Ciudad Victoria is the capital of the Mexican state of Tamaulipas . It is located in the center of the state and has a population of over 300,000. Ciudad Victoria is also the administrative seat of the Municipio Victoria .
history
Ciudad Victoria was founded on October 6th, 1750 as Villa de Santa María de Aguayo by José de Escandón , named after the first governor of the colony Nuevo Santander in the viceroyalty of New Spain . The city was laid out in the square shape typical of Spanish colonial cities around a central square, today's Plaza Hidalgo .
On April 20, 1825, Ciudad Victoria received city status and was named after him in honor of Mexican President Guadalupe Victoria . It became the capital of Tamaulipas. Ciudad Victoria has been the seat of a Roman Catholic diocese since 1871. In 1890 a railway line was built that ran from Monterrey to Tampico .
The opening of the road from Mexico City to Laredo , which marked the beginning of the Panamericana network in the 1930s , changed the cityscape. The city's function as a transit and junction in northern Mexico was further strengthened by the construction of additional roads to the US border. Ciudad Victoria has had El Petaqueño Airport since 1941 .

Ciudad Victoria has had a university as well as several research institutions and secondary schools since the 1960s.
The Tropic of Capricorn touches the southern edge of the city at 23 ° 27 ′ north latitude.
