Guadalupe Victoria (born September 29, 1786 in Tamazula , Durango as José Miguel Ramón Adaucto Fernández y Félix , † March 21, 1843 in Perote , Veracruz ) was the first president of Mexico . He was in office from 1824 to 1829.

Life

Victoria was born on September 29, 1786 in Tamazula, Durango. He studied at the Colegio de San Ildefonso law . In 1811 he took part in the revolution proclaimed by Miguel Hidalgo , in which he fought for José María Morelos . After the execution of Morelos, Victoria fought in Oaxaca and Veracruz .

After a battle near Palmellas, Veracruz, he went underground in the mountains in 1817, until Agustín de Itúrbide and Vicente Guerrero signed the Iguala plan in 1821 , which was to achieve independence from Spain through a constitutional monarchy . He supported Antonio López de Santa Anna and signed the plan of Casa Mata on February 1, 1823 , with the intention of overthrowing the Emperor Iturbide.

Victoria became the first president of this new country after the overthrow of the Emperor Agustín de Itúrbide. He chose a new name to make his symbolic significance clear: Guadalupe, based on Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe (Eng. Our Lady Guadalupe), whom he had protected, and Victoria of la victoria , which means "victory".

During his tenure, he abolished slavery in Mexico, founded the Colegio Militar (German military academy), signed a state treaty with the United Kingdom and expelled the Spanish citizens.

Victoria married the Mexican María Antonia Bretón in 1841. The two had no children.

On March 21, 1843, Guadalupe Victoria died of epilepsy in Perote, Veracruz, where he was also buried . On August 25, 1845 he was declared Benemérito de la Patria (German hero of the nation) by the Congress of the Union of Mexico . In 1925, his body was taken to the mausoleum in the base of the El Ángel de la Independencia monument in Mexico City .

In 1999 Mexico bought the ship USS Pharris (FF-1094) from the United States Navy and it was renamed "ARM Victoria" in honor of Victoria. According to him, Victoria County named in Texas.
