The Fort San Carlos of Perote |
Perote is a city in the Mexican state of Veracruz . In 2010 it had 37,516 inhabitants. It was founded in 1525 by Francisco Aguilar. Perote is the administrative seat of the Municipio Perote .
The most historically significant building in the city is Fort San Carlos, built in the 18th century. It originally served to protect the connection between Veracruz, Mexico's most important Atlantic port, and the capital. From 1949 to 2007 it was a prison and is now a museum .
The Cofre de Perote , a 4282 meter high shield volcano, rises in a national park near the city .
