His older brother Roberto is a former IBF super featherweight world champion and also a sought-after boxing coach who trains boxing greats such as Nonito Donaire , Kelly Pavlik , Antonio Margarito and Marcos Maidana . In his boxing gym in Oxnard ( California ), the Robert Garcia Boxing Academy , top boxers like Donaire, Maidana, Ríos and Evgeny Gradovich train alongside his brother Miguel .

Boxing career

Miguel García started amateur boxing at the age of 14. He won the 132 pound (lightweight) gold medal at the National Junior Golden Gloves 2004 and the National Police Athletic League Championships (PAL) 2005, as well as the bronze medal at the National Golden Gloves 2005. His amateur record also includes a win against Danny García .

In 2006 he switched to the professional field and won his pro debut on July 14th in Montebello against Domingo Mendoza. In addition to a number of construction wins , he also won in May 2008 against Robinson Castellanos, who later became the WBC's featherweight World Cup silver title holder. In June 2008 he won against the South Korean champion and Pan-Pacific title holder of the IBF, Lee Jae-Sung. On October 31, 2008 he defeated the Colombian World Cup challenger Walter Estrada (balance: 34-6) in Las Vegas by unanimous decision.

After winning 20 fights in a row, 17 of them prematurely, he boxed on April 3, 2010 in Corpus Christi for the vacant US featherweight championship. He defeated Tomas Villa (22-6) by tKo in the first round. In May 2010, he also won unanimously against Pedro Navarrete (24-7). On August 14, 2010, he beat Cornelius Lock by tKo in the eleventh round and thus prevented the North American champions from winning the IBF title.

By knocking out Canada's Olivier Lontchi (18-1), Miguel García got a fight against the undefeated Matt Remillard (23-0) on March 26, 2011 in Atlantic City . It was about the North American championship titles of the NABF and NABO in featherweight. García had his opponent on the ground three times and finally won prematurely in the tenth round, as Remillard's corner gave up the fight. On June 4, 2011, he defended both titles by knockout in the fourth round against Rafaël Guzmán (28-2) and on March 10, 2012 by tKo in the seventh round against Bernabe Concepcion (30-5).

With a tKo win in the eighth round against Jonathan Victor Barros (34-3, former WBA world champion), he got a WBO World Cup chance against the Mexican Orlando Salido on January 19, 2013 in Madison Square Garden in New York City (39-11). He already had eleven defeats in his professional record, but these accumulated almost exclusively at the beginning of his career. Since October 2008 Salido had won eight of his nine fights and received the world championship belts of the IBF and WBO associations. Not least because of his two early victories against the unbeaten Juan Manuel López , Ring Magazine put him at number 1 in the world rankings.

García clearly dominated the fight and already scored four times in the first four rounds, two of them in the first round. In the eighth round there was an unintentional collision with the heads, which finally ended the fight on the advice of the ring doctor. García had a nasal bone fracture from the collision, Salido had a fracture of the right eye socket from the impact. After evaluating the scoresheet, on which García was unanimously in the lead with 79: 69-79: 69-79: 70, Miguel Ángel García was declared the new world champion and received Salidos placement as number 1 in the world rankings of Ring Magazine.

On June 15, 2013 he defeated Juan Manuel López (33-2) by tKo in the fourth round and then rose to super featherweight. There he went on November 9, 2013 against the reigning WBO world champion in this weight class, the Puerto Rican Román Martínez (27-1) and won the fight with a knockout victory in the eighth round.

He defended the title for the first time on January 25, 2014 unanimously on points against Juan Carlos Burgos (30-1). After a two-and-a-half year break in the ring, he defeated Elio Rojas (24-2) in July 2016. On January 28, 2017, he won the WBC lightweight world title by knocking out Dejan Zlatičanin (22-0). In July 2017, he defeated Adrien Broner (33-2) at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn by unanimous decision on points.

On March 10, 2018, he defeated Sergei Lipinez (13-0) unanimously and thereby became IBF world champion in light welterweight, but resigned the title in April 2018 to relegate to lightweight. In his next fight on July 28, 2018, he defeated the lightweight Robert Easter (21-0) unanimously and won the IBF world title of his opponent in addition to his WBC title.

On March 16, 2019, he lost on points to Errol Spence (24-0). The welterweight fight was about the IBF world title. However, he defeated Jessie Vargas (29-2) in February 2020 .
