Orlando Salido Rivera (born November 16, 1980 in Ciudad Obregón ) is a Mexican professional boxer and former world champion of the IBF and WBO in featherweight.

Boxing career

Salido began professional boxing in 1996 and started his career unspectacularly. By the end of 2001 he had played 24 fights in Mexico and the USA, including 14 wins, eight losses and two draws. His most important victory of that time was against Regilio Tuur (44-3), former WBO super featherweight champion. He suffered one of his defeats against ex-WBC world champion Alejandro González (47-4).

He then won nine fights in a row, including against the undefeated US champion Lamont Pearson (17-0), the two world championship challengers Carlos Gerena (38-3) and Radford Beasley (22-2), as well as ex-WBO World champion Alfred Kotey (24-8). On September 18, 2004, he boxed in Las Vegas against Juan Manuel Márquez (42-2) for the featherweight world title of the WBA and IBF, but was defeated by the Mexican over twelve rounds on points. With four consecutive victories, including against ex-WBC world champion César Soto (54-14), he received another IBF World Cup chance against Robert Guerrero (19-1) in November 2006 . Salido was able to win the fight on points and was declared the new world champion of the IBF, but shortly afterwards he tested positive for steroids and the fight was annulled with a no-contest result. Salido was stripped of the IBF title after a few days.

But this time he was able to qualify for another championship fight after he was able to defeat Héctor Julio Ávila (41-3) and Renan Acosta (21-5) prematurely. The IBF title fight on October 23, 2008 against Cristóbal Cruz (36-11), but he lost just on points. On May 15, 2010 there was a rematch with Cruz, which Salido was able to win unanimously on points. In the subsequent title union fight with WBA world champion Yuriorkis Gamboa (18-0), however, he lost on points. In the fight itself, however, Salido had managed to knock down the Cuban.

On April 16, 2011 he surprisingly won the WBO Featherweight Championship by tKo in the eighth round against Juan Manuel López (30-0), after he had the Puerto Rican on the ground in the fifth round. He then defended his title through tKo in the eleventh round against Kenichi Yamaguchi (17-1) from Japan and through tKo in the eighth round against Weng Haya (15-3) from the Philippines. On March 10, 2012, he played a rematch against Juan Manuel López (31-1), which he won by tKo in the tenth round. In July of the same year he defeated Moises Gutierrez (21-4) by knockout in the third round.

On January 19, 2013, he lost the world title after a hard fight to Miguel Ángel García (30-0). García clearly dominated the fight and already scored four times in the first four rounds, two of them in the first round. In the eighth round there was an unintentional collision with the heads, which finally ended the fight on the advice of the ring doctor. García had a nasal bone fracture from the collision, Salido had a fracture of the right eye socket from the impact. After evaluating the score sheet, on which García was unanimously in the lead with 79: 69-79: 69-79: 70, Miguel Ángel García was declared the new world champion. However, this soon put the title down again to move up to super featherweight.

On October 12, 2013 he boxed in Las Vegas against Orlando Cruz (20-2) again for the now vacant WBO Featherweight Championship and won the title with a tKo victory in the seventh round. On March 1, 2014 he won on points against Vasyl Lomatschenko , the two-time Olympic champion and two-time world champion in the amateurs, who played his second professional fight against Salido. The world title had previously been withdrawn from him because he had not adhered to the weight limit.

In September 2014 he won early against Terdsak Kokietgym (53-4). In April 2015 he lost to Roman Martinez (28-2). Their rematch five months later ended in a draw. Another draw followed in June 2016 against Francisco Vargas (23-0). In May 2017 he won against Aristides Perez (30-9) by giving up his opponent after the seventh round.
