He started professional boxing in 1986 and won his first 14 fights in a row by knockout (knockout). After 17 more fights, including eleven wins and two draws, he boxed on September 12, 1991 in London for the WBO bantamweight championship. He won against the southpaw José Valdez (40-4), the later WBC world champion José Luis Castillo (18-0) and the former WBA / WBO world champion Louie Espinoza (46-7). In August 1994 he lost just on points against Alejandro González (32-2), a future WBC world champion. Also in the fight for the WBC Featherweight Championship on July 6, 1996 in Manila , he lost on points against Luisito Espinosa (38-7).

With a series of spectacular victories against, among others, Sean Fletcher (20-1) and Carlos Alberto Ramon Rios (43-1), he received another featherweight World Championship chance on May 15, 1999 in El Paso . He defeated the current title holder Luisito Espinosa (44-7) unanimously on points, but lost the title in the first defense on October 22 of the same year on points to Naseem Hamed (32-0). This was followed by defeats to Óscar Larios (37-2), Johnny Tapia (49-2) and Orlando Salido (23-9). In June 2011 he played his last fight.
