Marcos René Maidana (born July 17, 1983 in Margarita , Santa Fe Province ) is a former Argentinian professional boxer. He was world champion of the WBA in the welterweight and welterweight .

Amateur career

Marcos Maidana was Argentine light welterweight champion in 2002 and 2003 and qualified for the 2003 World Championships in Bangkok . There he defeated the Italian Brunet Zamora and the Serb Bogdan Mitić in the preliminary rounds and thus reached the quarter-finals, where he was defeated by the later bronze medalist Tofik Achmenow from Azerbaijan with 28:36 on points.

In 2004 he took part in the American Olympic qualification in Tijuana and Rio de Janeiro . He defeated Shammalye Lightbourne from Bahamas, Kevin Bizier from Canada and Austin Joseph from the Virgin Islands, but lost to Juan de Dios Navarro from Mexico (41:50) and Rock Allen from the USA (19:29). After he was unable to qualify for the Summer Olympics, he switched to the professional camp in June of the same year. Overall, he won 86 out of 90 fights as an amateur.

Professional career

He won his first 25 fights in a row, 24 of them by knockout , 10 of them in the first round. In his 8th fight on May 7, 2005 against Omar León, he had to go down in round 1 for the first time in his professional career, but was then able to knock León down twice, whereupon he won prematurely through tKo. He won another fight against Omar León six months later after just 21 seconds of the first round by knockout.

On February 7, 2009 he boxed in the Rostock city hall for the first time for the WBA light welterweight title, but was surprisingly and controversially defeated by the Ukrainian title holder Andreas Kotelnik , who was badly drawn, just under points. But already in his next fight on June 27, 2009, he secured the interim WBA world title through tKo in round 6 against the later WBC world champion Victor Ortiz . In the spectacular fight Maidana fell three times, but was able to knock Ortiz down twice; eventually the ring doctor ended the fight in Maidana’s favor, as he forbade Ortiz to continue boxing due to a laceration over his right eye and a swelling under his left eye.

He defended his interim title by knockout in round 3 against William González from Panama, knocked out in round 6 against the undefeated Victor Manuel Cayo from the Dominican Republic and by unanimously winning points against former WBO world champion DeMarcus Corley .

On December 11, 2010 he boxed in Las Vegas against Amir Khan for the regular world title of the WBA. The fight was utterly spectacular and was named one of the best fights of the decade by boxing legend Óscar de la Hoya . The Boxing Writers Association of America voted the duel "fight of the year". Khan managed a knockdown in the first round with several body hits, but he was hit hard even in round 10 and stumbled into the ring ropes. Maidana was punished by a blow with the elbow still by point deduction, which ultimately brought Khan the victory on points.

On April 9, 2011, however, he was able to fight for the interim world title of the WBA again when he defeated Érik Morales on points in Las Vegas . After Amir Khan was named super world champion of the WBA by his victory against Zab Judah on July 23, 2011 and thereby resigned his regular world title, Maidana was appointed regular WBA world champion.

On August 27, he should have defended his first title against the 28-year-old American Robert Guerrero (29-1-1), but this duel had to be due to a shoulder injury of the former, two-time IBF lightweight world champion and former IBF world champion in the super featherweight division will be canceled.

On September 23, 2011 he defended the title instead against the powerful Russian Peter Petrow and won by tKo in the fourth round. On February 25, 2012, he boxed in St. Louis against Devon Alexander and lost on points. His WBA title was not at stake as the welterweight bout took place.

Then he switched to welterweight and put down his world title. On September 15, 2012, he defeated the Mexican Jesús Soto Karass prematurely in the eighth round and thereby became international champion of the WBA. On June 8, 2013, he also won prematurely against Josesito López (30-5). On December 14, 2013 he defeated the WBA world champion Adrien Broner (27-0) by unanimous decision on points and had his opponent on the ground twice. That win was voted Surprise of the Year and Comeback of the Year by Ring Magazine .

He then boxed on May 3, 2014 in Las Vegas against WBC world champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (50-0), but lost to a 1: 2 majority decision by the judges. In the rematch on September 13, he lost again on points. This was also his last boxing match.
