Zab Judah (born October 27, 1977 in New York ) is an American professional boxer and former six-time world champion in the light welterweight and welterweight division of the IBF , WBO , WBA and WBC associations .

career

After he failed in the national qualification for the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta , he turned professional that same year at the age of 18. After 21 victories, including against Micky Ward , he was given the opportunity to box for the vacant IBF light welterweight title on February 12, 2000 . Judah secured the title by knocking out the South African Jan Piet Bergman in the fourth round after he had also gone down in the meantime. In the following years Zudah defended the title five times, including against Junior Witter and Terron Millet, where he had to briefly again to the ground.

On November 3, 2001, Zudah denied in Las Vegas a union fight against WBC and WBA title holder Kostya Tszyu from Australia. After Zudah repeatedly posed problems for his Russian-born opponent at the beginning of the fight with his speed, he was knocked down shortly before the end of the second round. Immediately trying to get up again, he could not stand on his feet, stumbled and slid to the ground again (often mocked as "Chicken Dance"), which then caused the referee to stop the fight a second before the break gong. Judah, who felt that he had been treated unfairly, attacked the referee and threw his stool in his direction. These derailments earned Zudah a six-month ban and a fine of $ 75,000. In the following years, Zudah never sought a rematch on the Showtime channel , but switched to the competing channels HBO and Don King .

After his return he won on December 13, 2003 by a points win over DeMarcus Corley , the WBO title, which was not taken seriously because of Tszyu's dominance at the time, but only defended the belt once, since he moved to the welterweight division in 2004.

There he challenged Cory Spinks on April 10, 2004 , the undisputed world champion of the class and in possession of the WBC, WBA and IBF belts. Judah lost the fight just on points. On February 5, 2005, however, there was a rematch with Spinks and this time Judah could clearly prevail with a victory by technical knockout in the ninth round. It is his only significant win against a boxer who is ranked among the best in his class.

On January 7, 2006, Judah boxed in a supposedly easy defense of the title against the Argentine Carlos Baldomir , who at that time had already recorded nine defeats. Baldomir sensationally won the fight on points. Since Baldomir had only paid the fees of the WBC association for this title fight, he only received their belt, which then led to the curious situation that the IBF continued to recognize Judah as the world champion of their association despite the defeat.

But he also lost this IBF title in his next fight on April 8, 2006 on points to Floyd Mayweather Jr. After a low blow to Judah there was tumult in the ring, as a result of which Judah's boxing license was canceled and he was suspended for a year . He was also fined $ 250,000.

After several victories against strong opponents, he remained at the top of the rankings and on March 5, 2011 again got the chance to win the IBF World Championship title, which he won through technical knockout in round 7 over Kaizer Mabuza.

On July 23, 2011, he faced a title union fight against WBA world champion Amir Khan , but was defeated by knockout in round 5. In March 2012, he defeated the undefeated Vernon Paris (26-0) by tKo in the ninth round and thus qualified again for a title chance at the IBF. On July 31, 2012, it was announced that he was signing TMT with the new promotion company of Curtis Jackson and Floyd Mayweather Jr.

In the fight for the world title of the WBA and WBC on April 27, 2013 in Brooklyn he lost on points against Danny García . In December 2013 he lost on points to Paul Malignaggi .
