Carlos Manuel Baldomir (born April 30, 1971 in Santa Fe , Argentina) is an Argentine professional boxer and former WBC welterweight champion.

career

Baldomir turned pro in 1993 and initially boxed exclusively in Argentina. In 1996, 1997 and 1998 he lost fights for the Argentine welterweight championship. In June 1998 he lost in his only second appearance outside Argentina in Copenhagen on points against the Dane Søren Søndergaard , against the former light and super middleweight title holder Dingaan Thobela he managed a draw in South Africa.

Through a long winning streak of eighteen fights without defeat since 1998, he was finally able to qualify for an elimination match of the WBC . Baldomir prevailed there and thus acquired the right to challenge the welterweight world champion Zab Judah . At that time, Judah held the WBA and IBF titles in addition to the WBC belt . However, since Baldomir only paid the fees of the WBC association, their duel was only about their belts. Baldomir was able to sensationally defeat Judah as a clear outsider on January 7, 2006 in New York's Madison Square Garden and thus secure the WBC title, the first major title of his career in his thirteenth year as a professional.

In his first title defense, he defeated Arturo Gatti on July 22, 2006 by technical knockout in the ninth round. Next it came on November 4, 2006 to the prestigious clash with the undefeated Floyd Mayweather Jr. , to whom he however lost his title by a clear point defeat.
