He is a former WBC world champion in super feather, light, half welter, world and light middleweight as well as former IBF world champion in welterweight. Most recently he was world champion of the three most important welterweight associations and of the WBC and WBA in the light middleweight division. He won all of his 50 professional fights and was the best boxer in the world according to various leading sports magazines.

Mayweather was the highest paid athlete in the world in 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2017.

As an amateur boxer, he was a three-time winner of the National Golden Gloves and bronze medalist at the 1996 Olympic Games .

amateur

Floyd Mayweather won 84 fights as an amateur with six losses. In 1993 he won the National Golden Gloves light flyweight, in 1994 the National Golden Gloves in the flyweight and 1996 the National Golden Gloves in the featherweight. In 1995 he was also American featherweight champion and won the national championship of the Police Athletic League. In the national Olympic qualification in 1996, he lost the first fight against Augie Sanchez , but won the two rematches of the tournament, which was played in the best-of-three mode, and thus bought the ticket for the 1996 Olympic Games.

Mayweather took part in the 8th World Championships in Berlin in May 1995 . There he defeated the Romanian Marian Leondraliu, but was defeated in the second round of the tournament to the later vice-world champion Noureddine Medjehoud from Algeria.

At the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta , he won the bronze medal in featherweight. He prevailed there against Bakhtiyar Tilegenov from Kazakhstan, Artur Grigorian from Armenia and Lorenzo Aragón from Cuba, before losing to the Bulgarian Serafim Todorov in the semifinals just on points .

Professional career

Mayweather and Victor Ortiz

In October 1996 he played his first professional fight. In his first 17 fights he won 13 times prematurely. He beat a number of opponents to build up , but also titleholders such as Louie Leija (18 wins-3 losses), Hector Arroyo (16-4), Miguel Melo (8-1), Gustavo Fabian Cuello (20-7) and Tony Pep ( 39-6).

In his 18th fight on October 3, 1998 in Las Vegas , he boxed against Genaro Hernandez (38-1) for the WBC super featherweight title and won by giving up his opponent after the eighth round. In December 1998 he defended the title against Angel Manfredy (25-2), who had already been taken out of the fight by the referee in the second round. In another title defense in February 1999, he defeated the Argentine challenger Carlos Alberto Ramon Ríos (44-2) unanimously on points.

In May 1999 he managed a knockout win against Justin Juuko (33-2) and an injury-related abandonment win against Carlos Gerena (34-2). In March 2000 he won unanimously on points against Gregorio Vargas (40-6) and also defeated Emanuel Augustus (22-16), who is known for his extraordinary fighting style, in a non-title fight seven months later by technical knockout in the ninth round.

On January 20, 2001 he won outstandingly against the undefeated Diego Corrales (33-0); Diego's corner of the ring threw in the towel in the 10th round after her protégé had knocked down five times. On May 26 of the same year he was also able to defeat Carlos Alberto Hernandez (33-2) by unanimous decision on points. In his eighth and final defense of the title, he defeated Jesús Auerelio Chávez (35-1) on November 10 by giving up his opponent at the end of the ninth round.

On April 20, 2002, he won the WBC lightweight title in Las Vegas by unanimously winning points against José Luis Castillo (45-4). He defended this in a rematch again unanimously against Castillo and in April 2003 unanimously and safely against Victoriano Sosa (35-2). Another title defense he denied in November 2003 in his native Grand Rapids against Phillip N'dou (31-1), whom he defeated by tKo in the seventh round. Then he put down the title to rise to the light welterweight division.

With wins against DeMarcus Corley (28-2) and Henry Bruseles (21-2), he qualified for a WBC title fight against Arturo Gatti (39-6) in June 2005. In one of the most lucrative pay-per-view broadcasts in in boxing history, Mayweather completely dominated the fight and won by abandoning Gatti's ring corner after the sixth round. He then defeated Sharmba Mitchell (56-4) in November 2005 by tKo in the sixth round. This gave him the chance to win the IBF welterweight title against Zab Judah (34-3) in April 2006 . The fight against Judah was accompanied by scandals; Mayweather touched the bottom of the ring with his gloves on after a right hook from Judah, but was not counted. In the tenth round Judah landed a low blow and hit the back of Mayweather's head, whereupon the referee stopped the fight. Shortly thereafter, Mayweather's uncle and trainer stormed the ring and began a wild exchange with Judah's support team, whereupon a tangible argument developed in the ring, which had to be resolved by the security service. The fight was then continued as normal, Mayweather won in the end unanimously on points. His uncle and a member of his support team as well as Zab Judah and his father later received heavy fines for the brawl in the ring.

On November 4, 2006 he defeated Carlos Baldomir (43-9) unanimously on points in Las Vegas in a not very respectable fight and thus received his WBC welterweight title. Mayweather justified his inactivity in the duel with a hand injury that he had sustained in the fight.

On May 5, 2007 he turned light middleweight Óscar de la Hoya (38-4) to fight for the WBC title and won on points. The fight became the most financially lucrative in boxing history; The fees for the two boxers alone totaled around 77 million US dollars, and the total income from television broadcasts was another 165 million. On December 8, 2007, he defeated the also undefeated Ricky Hatton (43-0) by tKo in the tenth round. On September 19, 2009, he defeated Juan Manuel Márquez (50-4) unanimously on points. He was also able to win an unanimous point victory on May 1, 2010 against Shane Mosley (46-5).

Mayweather in action against Juan Manuel Márquez (2009)

On September 17, 2011 there was a clash with WBC World Champion Victor Ortiz (29-2) in Las Vegas . The fight ended controversial: When Ortiz apologized to Mayweather after a deliberate headbutt in the fourth round, the latter took advantage of the situation and knocked the uncovered Ortiz with a left, followed by a right, to the ground. Ortiz was then tallied by referee Joe Cortez. Since Cortez had turned to the judges because of the point deduction against Ortiz, he stated that he had not recognized the precipitation as unsportsmanlike and assumed a regular precipitation. Mayweather has been heavily criticized by some observers and commentators for this behavior. The subsequent interview with HBO presenter Larry Merchant , who had a wild exchange with Mayweather, and the interview with the sentence: "I wish I was 50 years younger ... I would kick your ass" ("I. wish I was 50 years younger ... I would kick your ass ”) ended. On May 5, 2012 Mayweather was able to defeat Miguel Cotto (37-2) unanimously on points and thus win the WBA super world title in the light middleweight division.

On May 4, 2013, he defeated Robert Guerrero (31-1) unanimously on points. On September 14, 2013, he boxed in Las Vegas against the also unbeaten Saúl Álvarez (42-0) and won on points. He became the world light middleweight champion of the WBA and WBC. On May 3, 2014, he boxed welterweight against WBA world champion Marcos Maidana (35-3) and won on points. He also defeated this in the rematch on September 13, 2014.

Mayweather in 2015

After several years of negotiations, the Mayweathers fight against Manny Pacquiao for the welterweight title of the three most important associations took place on May 2, 2015 at the MGM Hotel in Las Vegas . He won the unspectacular fight unanimously on points and was thus also the title holder of the WBO. Mayweather received a record battle exchange of approximately $ 150 million, his opponent approximately $ 100 million. Tickets cost between US $ 1,000 and US $ 10,000, with a total of US $ 74 million from admission prices. TV viewers had to pay 89–99 US dollars for transmission on American pay TV, and in Germany for Sky 20–30 euros. In July 2015, the WBO decided to revoke Mayweather's welterweight title for failing to pay a contract fee of $ 200,000 to the WBO after beating Pacquiao. In addition, he did not put down his WBA and WBC light middleweight titles; However, according to the rules of the WBO, each boxer can only carry titles in one weight class.

With a unanimous point win against Andre Berto on September 13, 2015, Mayweather set Rocky Marciano's record with 49-0 wins , with Marciano having won more fights by knockout. Then he announced the end of his career.

On August 26, 2017, he returned to the ring for an evening and met Irish MMA fighter Conor McGregor in Las Vegas , who had wanted this fight for a long time. The sport of boxing was fought in Mayweathers . Mayweather won the fight with a technical knockout in the tenth round and exceeded the old record of Rocky Marciano (49: 0) with 50-0 wins .

Away from the boxing ring

Mayweather Jr. grew up in difficult circumstances, his family and social environment was overshadowed by violence and drugs. Floyd Mayweather Sr. , who was also a professional boxer and promoted his son's career, was shot in the leg by his brother-in-law during an eviction argument a year after Mayweather Jr. was born while his son was in his arms. His mother and aunt were addicted to drugs, the latter died of complications from an AIDS- related illness. Mayweather Jr. grew up partially with his grandmother. He concentrated almost exclusively on boxing at an early age and dropped out of high school for it.

Mayweather Jr. has received multiple sentences for assault and domestic violence. On June 1, 2012, he was sentenced for the first time to an unpunished prison term (90 days) for physical violence towards an ex-girlfriend, which he also served.

Income and property

According to a survey by Forbes Magazine in June 2014, Mayweather Jr. was the world's highest-paid athlete with an annual income of the equivalent of 78 million euros. In the period 2014/15 he led the ranking with the equivalent of 212 million euros, clearly surpassing Tiger Woods' previous record of 101 million euros (2007/08).

Others

Mayweather is the nephew of ex-boxer Roger Mayweather , who won two world titles and was defeated twice by Julio César Chavez . He coached Mayweather in the fight against de la Hoya . His father coached Oscar de la Hoya from 2001 to 2006 before the collaboration was terminated due to financial disagreements. Floyd Mayweather Sr. had asked for $ 2 million to fight his son.

On February 17, 2008, Mayweather appeared at the WWE major event No Way Out and hit the newly-returned 2.13 m tall, 200 kg wrestler The Big Show in the face, accidentally injuring him. Many viewers thought it was an acted scene, but Mayweather's right hook broke Big Show's nose. On the TV show that followed, The Big Show challenged Mayweather to a fight at Wrestlemania 24, which Mayweather accepted. This was a fight with no rules . Mayweather was allowed to win the fight by knockout (this time played) by using a brass knuckle against Big Show.

Mayweather during his brief WWE career

In April 2012 CompuBox calculated that Mayweather is the most effective boxer of all weight classes, 46% of his punches hit the opponent and only 16% of his opponent's punches find their target. This makes him one of the strongest boxers both offensively and defensively and overall the best by numbers.
