Sharmba David Mitchell (born August 27, 1970 in Takoma Park , Maryland ) is a former American professional boxer and former WBA light welterweight champion.

Boxing career

Sharmba Mitchell is the son of a postal worker and was introduced to boxing by him at the age of eight, where he trained at the Round One Gym in Hyattsville. He played between 160 and 164 fights during his amateur career, of which he lost only seven. In 1988 he finished second in featherweight at the National Golden Gloves in Omaha.

In 1988 he switched to the pros and remained undefeated in his first 31 fights. He defeated a number of opponents, but also known ex-world champions such as Rafael Limón and Rocky Lockridge . He defeated the undefeated Chad Broussard (35-0, 28 K. o.) In November 1993 by knockout in the first round and thereby became North American champion of the NABF in the lightweight.

In 1994 he lost each time prematurely to Leavander Johnson and Stevie Johnston , but was then able to prevail against eleven other opponents; his most significant win was a knockout win in the first round against eventual world champion Terron Millett . He then boxed on October 10, 1998 in France against the native Moroccan Khalid Rahilou for the WBA World Light Welterweight Championship. Mitchell had his opponent on the ground four times in rounds 2, 3 and 7 and won unanimously on points after twelve rounds. In 1999 he defended the world title by winning points against Pedro Saiz from the Dominican Republic, Reggie Green from the USA and Elio Ortiz from Venezuela. In 2000, he only had one defense of his title when he beat the Puerto Rican Felix Flores on points in September.

On February 3, 2001 he boxed in Las Vegas in a title association against WBC world champion Kostya Tszyu , but had to give up the fight after the seventh round due to a knee injury. He won his next five fights again, including on points against ex-world champion Vince Phillips . On February 7, 2004, he was in Atlantic City new interim world champion of the IBF light welterweight after he had defeated Lovemore N'dou unanimously on points. Less than two months later, he defended the title on points against Michael Stewart (35-1). In the fight for the regular IBF World Championship on November 6, 2004 in Arizona, this time he lost to Kostya Tszyu after four knockdowns by tKo in the third round. In November 2005 he also lost through tKo in the sixth round against Floyd Mayweather Jr.

After a points win against Jose Luis Cruz (33-1) in May 2006, he lost in August 2006 by knockout in the fourth round against Paul Williams . This was also his last boxing match.
