Kermit Cintrón (* 22. October 1979 in Carolina , Puerto Rico ) is a Puerto Rican professional boxer and former world champion of the IBF in the welterweight division .
Career
Kermit Cintrón came to the United States with his two brothers Harold and Jason at the age of eight and lived with his uncle Benjamin Serrano in Warminster Township , Pennsylvania. Her father sent the three children to the United States after their mother died of cancer and he could no longer take care of them financially. When Kermit was 13 years old, his father also died of a heart attack. Motivated by his uncle, a former professional boxer, Kermit then started boxing. Before that he had also worked as a wrestler.
After less than 30 amateur fights, he switched to the professional camp in 2000. He won 24 fights in a row, 22 of them prematurely. He then boxed on April 23, 2005 in Las Vegas for the WBO welterweight championship against Antonio Margarito , but had to accept four knockdowns and lost the fight by tKo in the fifth round.
After two consecutive victories, he got the chance to fight for the vacant IBF welterweight championship on October 28, 2006 in Palm Beach . He defeated the Californian Mark Suárez by tKo in the fifth round. He then defended the title in July 2007 against Walter Matthysse, and in November 2007 against Jesse Feliciano . On April 12, 2008 there was a rematch with Antonio Margarito, the Cintrón lost by knockout in the sixth round.
A points win against the Black Panther Lovemore N'dou in November 2008, allowed him a WBC title chance in the light middleweight division against Sergio Martínez . Martínez dominated the fight in February 2009 and scored significantly more hits (151: 103), while Cintrón suffered a bloody cut over the left eye and went to the ground in round 7 and was counted. Cintrón did not come up until 10 and was waved by the referee, but Cintrón then claimed he had been headbutted to the ground and complained heavily about the fight being stopped. After some tumult in and outside the ring, the fight was finally continued, as referee Frank Santore suddenly claimed that Cintrón had already been back on his feet at 9 and that he (Santore) had not stopped the fight at all. In the slow-motion repetition, however, it was clearly visible that the impact was caused by a strong left hand to the temple and that the heads of the two never touched. In the last lap Martínez received a point deduction for hitting the back of the head, which resulted in a controversial draw.
In May 2009 he defeated the undefeated Mexican Alfredo Angulo unanimously on points. A year later he boxed against Paul Williams in California , flew out of the ring in the fourth round and then could not continue fighting. After evaluating the scoresheet, Williams was declared the winner. He suffered another defeat in July 2011 against Carlos Molina . On November 26, 2011, he fought against Saúl Álvarez in Mexico for the WBC light middleweight championship, but lost to tKo in round 5.
